So why's she called Aunt Fan?

Over here in the UK Aunt Fanny is called Aunt Fan, cos Fanny is a fairly nasty word to use for vagina, and it's pretty shocking if it was realeased over here. Some people say it's cos she has a big 'fanny', which is a fairly crude thing to say in a kids film!

Anyway, my point is, why didn't they change it to something else in the Uk insead of fan? it doesn't make sense at all, especially when rodney asks why shes called aunt fan.. there is no real explaination! wierd, i wud have changed it to something else... lol... anyway, there we go.

In the USA fanny means but or ass. Fanny is not a bad word over here.

I'm from the UK and I just watched the film on DVD, they called her Aunt Fanny throughout the film...
Fanny meaning vagina is just slang here, it's proper meaning is still "rear end".

Really? Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better. Hello? Hello?

Lmao. I knew that, and for some reason every time I heard 'Aunt Fanny' I thought of that, and I don't even live in the UK. I find that pretty funny. =)

There's also a line in it where Rodney is told by his mother (I think) "and don't pick your bum". Are you telling me that in the US version this was "and don't pick your ..." er "behind"?

Well, "Fanny" can actually be considered a name in the U.S., plus it's a silly term for a bum, so that's the joke. The problem is that while "Fan" could be considered a shortening of "Fanny" here in the states, in the U.K., it won't translate properly, and the joke is completely lost. I suppose "Aunt Bum" would be the closest proximity, but as "Bum" can't really be considered a name, even that doesn't really work. I suppose you just have to figure the overall conveyance, the concept of her large derriere, regardless of what she's called.

I actually thought the name Aunt Fanny was a reference to the British book series 'The Famous 5' by Enid Blyton - there was a recurring character with the name Aunt Fanny - while this was acceptable in the 50s-60s when the books were written, more recent editions and adaptions have changed it to 'Aunt Frances' to be more PC.

I just thought it amusing to see two characters with the same name, and in both cases the question of appropriateness comes up.

I'd hardly say 'fanny' is "fairly nasty". There are MUCH more vulgar words used as slang for female genitalia. It's one of those words that may have seemed like such a bad word in primary school (age 5-11), but its a bit like 'bloody', when you grow up, you don't even think of them as swear words anymore...
