The Wrong Directors

I haven't watched the series since it was on last summer, so I don't remember a lot of names. But I remember thinking when they chose the 2 guys it was really a bad choice.

I also don't think they should have chosen that script if all they wanted to do was change every scene in it. Honestly, I remember they all loved the script Prisoner (which I read and it was very good), but chose to go with the weaker script then spend the rest of the production trying to fix it up.

Then they chose those two as directors. Which I thought was an odd choice because their test film was the obviously weakest one of the group, and they didn't express too much interest in that script. They were more interested in goofy comedy than subtle human comedy.

And I also remember that there was a director who was absolutely in love with Shaker Heights and said that was the only script she wanted to do if she was chosen. They all thought she was weird, but I kept thinking that is the kind of passion a director needs to make a great film. She loved the script, was over the moon to direct it, probably would have only wanted the best for the script and done a better film. Instead they choose the moron twins who weren't huge fans of the script.

And poor Shia, he loved the script because he related to it so much, all the dramatic family moments mirrored his life, and they just cut them out.

So they chose a serious family drama with dashes of humor in it and tried to transform it in editing to just a comedy with dashes of seriousness.

It's choices like that that make these films bomb. Poor Miramax, hopefully they'll learn something with season 3.

I do agree with you on some of those things, but all in all... the movie turned out okay with what they had to work with.

It's real simple...take a subpar script, take two weird dudes and give them 1 million dollars and then throw in the writer of the subpar script into the equation and what you get is "good T.V."

It was obvious from the start that the fact that these two weird guys didn't like that particular script meant that there were numerous chances for everybody to butt heads and make for good drama...(the movie was certainly anything but entertaining)

Project Greenlight is a great idea but they need to legitimize it by selecting the best script and then the best director.

honest to God, i think i'd flip if any of you people who write this stuff actually knew what you were talking about. all you know...all you ever base you "ideas" on is what the t.v. spoon-feeds you to watch. you know absolutely nothing about what really went on. for every foot that made it to air, 1000 feet were shot, so there's lots you didn't see. do you realize that movie scripts get re-written, changed, and heavily edited ALL THE TIME before they're shot?! do you realize that the studio ordered most of the dramatic cuts?? no you don't, because most of you still don't know how to find canada on a map. so stop trying to make the rest of us think you really know anything, keep your mouths shut, and learn something in school before you think you can express a coherent opinion. p.s.: the directors previous film "pennyweight" was eligible for the oscar for best live-action short, so i'd say they're pretty damn talented. didn't know that either, did ya?

efram, is that you?

why would we want to find Canada on a map?

As an aquaintance of Kyle Rankin I can only say this. The man knows his stuff. He is quite a funny guy and has an excellent mind for the business. Then there is Efram Potelle. The ying to Kyle's yang. Efram is a technical genious. Efram did all the sound leveling and I believe all of the sound effects for their short film, Pennyweight. The 2 of them make a great team and I bet anyone else that has worked with them like myself will agree. I hope these 2 continue to have success in what they do and I urge people to check out their website at www.newbornpix.com to stay up to date with their current projects.

Wow,
You are simply amazing. Kyle and Efram stink, their movie stinks...and apparently you have a strange affection for that.

im still trying to finish watching the series and the efram guy is just painful to watch. there's a reason why in the five yrs sice these two have not been asked to direct another studio film.

reply

LOL Thats what I was thinking. What does finding Canada on a map have to do with any of this??
Simmer down there buddy
We're talking about a crappy reality TV series here so take it easy.
Kyle, Efram, and Erica were manufactured. Plain and simple. Reality TV stars and nothing more. Hell, there have been Survivor contestants that have gone on to better careers than the Greenlight people.
Academy award nominated short films? Yea.. okay. And what have they done since Greenlight? How many other feature films have they done.
Hmm?? Oh NONE you say?
That's right NONE!
That was their only feature. And there won't ever be another one
