Finally Being Released on DVD

After much delay, this amazing film is finally being released on DVD, in September 2005. Amazon.com reports that it will be available beginning September 20, 2005.

I saw this movie at a film festival over a year ago, and have been haunted by it ever since. The acting is powerful, with Kiron Kher delivering a commanding performance. I was particularly struck by the Punjabi dialogue, which is rare in a serious film of this calibre. It was raw and authentic to the region. For anyone whose family was affected by Partition, you won't soon forget this film.

After the movie ended, I remember sitting in the theatre for some time just absorbing what I had witnessed. I wanted so badly to share the experience with my family and friends. But alas, it was not playing in movie theatres, and there was no DVD to be had. I've waited patiently for its release, and now can't wait to purchase a copy.

If you haven't yet seen it, you must. And spread the word. We need more serious Punjabi language films.

I'm looking for the orginal version, I don't want a pirated one, do you guys know where i can get it from?

reply

I bought my copy in India but the same dvd is available at http://store.nehaflix.com/mabe.html.

However, although alas I speak neither language, I think this is in Urdu rather than Punjabi (if indeed it exists in two versions) with English subtitles available.

The film was definitely in Panjabi, although a smattering of Urdu may have been splashed in here and there.

I wish there would be a period film made on the Sindhi experience during Partition. There are several notable ones set in Punjab (ie. Pinjar) but I haven't seen anything from the Sindhi Hindu perspective.
