Is this based on 'American Tragedy?'

Maybe it's the boating scenes that recalled Theodore Dreiser's "American Tragedy." Supposedly this is based on a German short story, "Die Reise nach Tilsit" but I wonder if they both draw on the true story of Chester Gillette and his boating adventures.
