Andrew would have probably made it outta Mexico alive if he hadn't tried to take the money back. If that would have been me I would have just chalked that up as a loss and went about my way. And if stealing back his own money wasn't bad enough he then decides to rob the drug dealer too. lol. He should have just went back there and took the stuff the Pepe gave him so he could get the stuff out of his system and went home. Then he goes off trusting someone he didn't even know for help with the mechanic. the only smart thing he did the entire time was help his girlfriend escape. He really brought what happened to him on himself imo.

Although it's not stated in the movie, I think he took the money from the valet stand where he worked. They show him putting money in a lock box at the valet stand. Then Colin Hanks seems surprised that he is able to produce a couple of grand. I think he felt like he could "borrow" the cash from work, sell the drugs and replace the cash before he got in trouble for it. If he returned without the cash or the drugs, he'd be arrested in America for theft. Just what I think the movie was implying.
