I can't believe no one likes this movie

I thought this was an outstanding movie. The acting was great and it was very suspenseful.. I am frankly shocked at what I am reading about this film on IMBD.. Granted, the ending in my humble opinion was perhaps a little weak. If this movie had been directed by Hitchcock it would be praised as a classic! For example, the scene where the armed Mexican authorities were surrounding the Corvair (obvlivious to what the trunk held) while the dog barked suspiciously was great! I felt the anguish that the character portrayed as he crouched down and looked below the car.. I just can't believe that this movie is rated so low by IMBD voters!! (then again I thought Citizen Kane sucked, so what do I know?) ;)

I thought it was awesome! The drug dealers were totally freaky and I had no idea how it would turn out. Great suspense.

Right on Sweetest! You have obviously have great taste in movies!

I'm glad that it is on television now. I tell all of my friends and co-workers that it was on TMC. I'm going to tell them that it will be on Showtime next.

You really liked the Mexican scene? I was the one with the rifle going after the dog. That is the scene that I auditioned for and I thought I screwed up, but I'm glad that I got the part.

I just didn't like that the movie took so long to come out. I wish I could work with the director Ariel Vromen again. He's a talented director.

Enigmawriter,

That is very cool! I thought that scene in particular was one of the best in the film! You should be proud.. I guess one of the reasons I liked that scene or identified with it in some way was because I had the chance to go to Tijauna back in August of '05.. I certainly can understand the fear of what Balfours character must have been feeling.. When you are down there, its like living on the edge.. You never know what might happen, or who may try to bribe you, or rob you etc.. As a gringo from Indiana I definately felt a sense of fear and could only imagine if that had been me in that dude's shoes.. As I said before, if that scene was in a Hitchcock movie, it would be praised (and rightfully so) as one of the best scenes of dramatic suspense ever! I still can't believe some of the bad reviews that were written on IMBD!
So how did you get a chance to audition for the role? That is so cool.. I would love to have a part like that in a movie!

reply

Thank you, Dan.

I don't like crossing the border as well. There are very crazy things that happen there, but it does have its good bits. I actually do picture a Hitchcock feel to this movie, but if it was created by Alfred, it would be thrice as nice!

Many people have their tastes in movies, so you're going to get a lot of weird reviews for this movie.

How I got the role for this film: A friend of mine passed some information along to me about this movie. They were looking for two roles, one was a border patrol agent and the other was a young Mexican soldier. I decided to go to the audition and they gave me the sides of the four soldiers scene from the movie . The scene was where my character points his gun at the annoying barking dog. My friend said to act mean or over the top. So I did and the next day, I got a phone call from the casting agent telling me that I got the part.

I couldn't sleep I was so excited. Even when it was time to film my scene, I couldn't fall asleep. Somehow, I managed and everyone liked the performance, including the director who padded me on the back.

Eric Balfour and Lauren German were the only people I saw. Colin Hanks wasn't there. But, Eric and Lauren were very tired. They actually sat with us to eat lunch and we struck a conversation. Just to let you know, Eric and Lauren were very, very nice people and outgoing too.

That's a little of what happened two years ago. Very fun!

Great story! Was Lauren German as hot as she appeared in the movie? :) So did you have any acting experience before this or was this a random bit of good luck? Were you nervous during the actual filming? How many takes did you have to do in the part? Hopefully the director will remember you and consider you for something else later! Oh yeah, and the most important question: Was Lauren German as hot as she appeared in the movie? :) The closest I ever came to even being remotely close to being in a movie was working in the building where they were filming a scene in the movie "Stranger than fiction". Yeah, not exactly a claim to fame lol.. :)

Words can't express how beautiful she looked. She was feeling very tired, though. She had her head on the table a lot. Either the sun was making her sick or she just had a long week of shooting. Eric did say they were shooting day and night.

I have acted before but not in Hollywood films. Mostly independent films and friends films. I was acting since I was 5 years old, copying movies that I've seen and acting with my brothers in our backyard and with our video camera. It was very fun, some might not call that acting but playing around. Not for us, we actually had story lines and finished the movies the next week and come up with another one. Even if they were cheesy. I'm thinking of writing scripts for those movies we made.

I don't know, but I think luck did have something to do with it too, because I wasn't the only auditioning for that role. I was actually more nervous at the audition than I was in the filming. I guess you can say that I "felt at home" during the filming, because I was so used to it.

I believe I had three takes for one scene. In the beginning when we're walking out and I'm talking with that other soldier, we nailed the first shot, but the director wanted to do it again. So, we did, but I accidentally bumped against the back of the military jeep's bumper and we had to reshoot it. They were laughing instead of angry. We did it again and that scene was done. Then they moved the camera to the side of the car, from there on out, it was just two takes each, the second one for "just in case" shots.

Lauren was very hot! She sat next to me when we were having lunch, then during filming, I really saw how TALENTED she was. She was scared and sad and tired at the same time because her character was afraid of getting caught and all this turmoil and I saw how beautiful she looked when she passed right by me. We did that scene twice as well.

Now the one scene that I did take my time on was the scene where I'm heading towards the barking dog and looking at the trunk. I did that like three times. The director liked all three takes, one where I whistled. But, I guess they opted for that scene. When Eric and Lauren arrived for their scene, it was really a fun experience. Eric and I did a blooper and we just went with it. He got up from the ground and said in English instead of Spanish, that "You know, my buddy is in the trunk, he accidentally overdosed and I stuffed him in the trunk." I just followed it along by saying in English, "Well, that's okay, I mean, this is Mexico, I've seen some purdy weird things here. You sure he's dead?" Then I stopped because it seemed like the director was a little upset we were taking film space. I guess. It was fun to say the least, though.

Well, I hope Ariel will consider me for another of his movies or someone who's watched the movie to choose me for their movie. That would be great, then I could get out of here and make something of myself instead of working this 9-5 job. It's great sometimes, but it gets boring.

****The closest I ever came to even being remotely close to being in a movie was working in the building where they were filming a scene in the movie "Stranger than fiction". Yeah, not exactly a claim to fame lol.. :)****

LOL! Stranger Than Fiction, huh? Nice! Sorry for the long post, but I thought I would add some detail into the story since it was a very fun time in my life.

I was very entertained, and I don't understand all the hatred RX has inspired. Granted, it was no classic, but I thought it struck the right tone of suspense and dark humor. It was reminiscent of Go, which is one of my personal favorites. I found the scene where Colin Hanks overdoses to be particularly excruciating. Eric Balfour made a very appealing leading man, and I hope he gets the opportunity to star in another film. I also liked the moody electronic soundtrack. Overall: B

I felt the same way when Colin and Eric were swallowing those pills. I was feeling sick to my stomach. That was a lot of dope! No wonder he overdosed.

Hello again enigmawriter,

You were there.. what exactly was in those "drug balls".. did they make something out of flour or something?

Dan

reply

I wish I knew, to tell you the truth. I was just in the scene they needed me for. But, I'm sure they didn't actually swallow the bundles.

reply

I liked it very much. I love the three leads. Eric Balfour has grown on me and now I can't enough of him. Everyone should see a film he did called Lie With Me. But this film was interesting and sad. And something occurring these days.

reply

My parents are watching it right now. I watched a little of it with them. Its pretty good.

RIP River Phoenix.

It's great that it's getting noticed. First on The Movie Channel and now on Showtime.

What a great movie! Hey Enigmawriter, You were great too! I first saw this movie on cable and then went out and rented it because I wanted my friends to see it as well! I'm an Eric Balfour fan from "Six Feet Under" so it was nice to see him in another dark yet entertaining role! I have a question tho! I've been trying to find the name of the song and artist who does the erie/spacey song that is played just after the guys take the drugs and they are driving towards the border. Does anyone know? I'd appreciate it!! Keep up the good work Enigmawriter! If there is something else that you have been in, please let me know!

reply

Thank you Spiritos. I don't know the name of the song, sorry. I'll check up on it. I have worked on other movies, but they are independent films. You know, friends or local directors. I recently added a resume and picture to the IMDB RESUME if you click on my name.

Here is a website of my actor demo and things that I have done if you or anyone is interested in checking out. I wish to work on more films and escape reality for awhile. Thank you again, Spiritos.

The youtube account has a short film that I was in titled FLASHBACKS and one that I wrote and directed titled MADNESS which I won an award for. It's only 2 minutes.

Here you go. Enjoy.

I just watched it and thought it was great. Loved the drug dealer's character. Creepy!

reply

just saw it on shotime, not as bad as the "info" for the satalite says (no stars, not even a half) and not as bad as who last reviewed it on the main page, i thought it was pretty good actualy, no fairy tail ending for it, more realistic is what i like to see. sends a powerful messege. wouldnt buy it, but i wouldnt bash it like most, id recomend to anyone who hasnt seen it.

reply

Yeah agreed. It was a good way to spend 2 hrs on a lazy saturday.
Kind of reminded me of one of my fav. movies, The Edukators... if you liked this youd prob like that if you can deal with subtitles.

reply

Well the film sucked.

reply

you suck.. and I dont really have to explain why.. you just suck and you are regarded as useful by no one..

reply

Yeahh, this movie was really really good. I don't know why so many people hate on it. At first I only put it on because I saw that Colin Hanks is in it and I hadn't seen him in anything since he was in Orange County. I still havnt seen the beginning but I caught the last hour of it and it was a lot better than I expected. This movie was a lot better than people say it is and the acting is really good.

reply

i wish the director and writer got...well..won't go there..

reply

I really liked it too and was thinking the same thing - I don't understand all the hate. I wouldn't go out and purchase it, but it's definitely enjoyable.
