Jack n' Rose in 'The Ballad of Jack and Rose'

Finest portion of this film (to me) was the opening 20-30 minutes prior to the 'invasion' of the mainlanders. I could have spent the entire two hours just watching Jack and Rose live out their quiet, peaceful lives. Growing veggies...sketching bridges...sharing thoughts.

Daniel Day-Lewis is such a good actor and Camilla Belle offered up the perfect foil for him in this film.

I couldn't agree more. The beginning had such a warm, pleasant atmosphere. I wish there were more good movies entirely like those 30 minutes - uplifting but with good actors and script. Most of the ambitious filmmakers nowadays seem to think that movies need to have dark, twisted themes to be considered good and those with the warm atmosphere are usually the sunday family movies full of cliches and bad dialogue that make you want to roll your eyes every other minute. I enjoy movies with difficult themes but there are more sides to life. Sometimes it's nice to watch something quiet and peaceful. In this case - I think The Ballad of Jack and Rose would be much better if they didn't try to make it so dark and edgy. It just didn't work and seemed forced. It would be more challenging to make a good movie, with a good script and story about two happy people living together on the island like Jack and Rose did and not make it another boring, generic sunday story.
