Why so underrated?!

Usually IMDb ratings are more or less accurate, but this movie way underated.
It is a wonderful movie with an extremely well written script. The movie interweaves more than one story i.e relationship between Jack and Rose, the environmentalist vs. housing developer, Rose growing up,etc. and it does so seamlessly. And Of Course the cinematography and music is amazing.
But here I come into the message board to find threads about people discussing this movie as some sort of incest fest. Honestly, I never for a moment thought of their relationship as incestuous.
A lot of people didn't seem to have understood the portrayal of Rose's innocence(at one point of time one of the characters even spell it out for the audience). It's quite sad really, that a lot of people think that such a close relationship is either unreal or assume the worst.
I rarely give movies a 10 star rating. But I feel this one deserved it just for being different from the usual drama score.

Cinematography, music and acting were all amazing indeed.

Today's entertainment 'culture' AND its consumers are fine with appropriating child beauty pageants, over-sexualized images of teenage pop stars, paparazzi obsession with family dramas of celebs, mind-numbing reality series presenting people with extreme conditions as freaks with voyeuristic value, not to mention thanatography of all sorts. Just when it comes to an artistic movie dealing with complex issues sans resorting to some base moralism, the audience gets uncomfortable and disturbed. Probably because the hypocrisy of the former is easy-to-digest while the honesty of the latter is not. There you have an exceptional film terribly underrated.

I was extremely surprised as well. This is at least a 9.

Can I just agree, without repeating the strong arguments already advocated here? It is a shame really, that quality has such a tough chance of being recognized today.

I find myself watching this movie over and over. It really is a beautiful story. It is very sad when Jack realizes his daughter is not prepared for the real world and he won't be there to guide her.

reply

And even more tragic when he realizes it's his own fault that Rose is completely unprepared to live a life of her own.

This movie is excellent on so many levels.

I gave 9. it is just because I am a spoiled bastard who wished a different end. anyone who watches this movie till end must rate sth higher than 8.
watch everything you like, dont like everything you watch.

reply

People hear what it's about and just freak out. they don't take the time to (or are incapable of) understand(ing) the story. it's a really a beautiful story and was very well done. I gave it a nine.

Yes, it's at least a 9!

Just watched it with some friends and most of them were a bit disturbed by it, guess it's not predictable enough I suppose. I also worried that it would end in some kind of murder/incest-drama like some movies seem to feel you need to be dramatic enough, this manages that in more intrecate manners.

About the low rating I'm wondering if there might have been some kind of campaign against it? Happens to some movies that some conservative groups find disturbing.

reply

I was surprised by the relatively low rating. Not only because it's really good but it's also the type of film that usually has a high rating on IMDB. Maybe too many people were just creeped out by the themes.

Conform or be cast out

so, that means you never felt a little bored? For me, the rate's just fair.. This movie ended up being a bit boring, but i understand that this is simply a matter of taste. Anyway, I didn't like Rose and Jack's background story - it seemed to be a little too far-fetched (if i can say so), as a way to legitimate Jack's (and Roses') philosophy of living

you know, what could he be, if not a renewable energy engineer?? too obvious, i guess
