Was it mentioned in the film when and why the wife and mother left them?

The wife walked out on Jack and their daughter when Rose was just five years old. It is never said why she chose to do so but Jack has mentioned once before that she was a selfish woman. Little else is said about her again so I suppose it is up to the viewer to piece together whatever conclusion they so desire.
