The Emily French (Toni Collette) character...

Does anyone know who the Emily French character is based on? It's a once-Oscar nominated actress who vanished from the public eye to do Cinemax-type films, so my guess was Sally Kirkland. Any other ideas?
I can't find the article the movie was based on (a 1996 piece in Details by Steve Fishman) anywhere online, but I doubt they named her in the article either.
Anyway, I thought this movie was truly funny and smart. A real sleeper.

No one; the "cast" is purely fictional. The actual movie was an amateur film called Raw Tunes; it's even here on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195210.

Here's the full story from the Providence Journal (free registration req'd): http://www.projo.com/movies/content/projo_20040923_lshot23.294b0a.html.

What I would like to know is why they (Matthew and Alex's characters) were so in awe of her being in the film. She's a nutjob. (A funny one though)

I'm quite a lovely person - apart from my terrible taste in pie.

I agree entirely. She seemed like a total psychopath. After the peeing in the glass scene, I told myself, "If they continue to ooooh and ahhhh over this psychopath, amazed at how 'wonderful' she is, then I think this movie lost all credibility." The movie lost all credibility :P

well... they admired her because her "talent" acting, not because of her personality. Like if I were an owner or whatever the person is called who is in charge of a football team(the players) I would choose the better players over the ones with a better personality.

Did that make enough sense?

I just watched this movie and I wondered about that too. I suspect it's an amalgam of Madonna ("my Eurotrash director boyfriend"), Angelina Jolie ("jolie" is a French word, meaning "pretty"), and Kate Winslet (who seems to have an uninhibited/"ballsy" public persona/demeanor and who had an explicit peeing scene in Holy Smoke (1999)). Maybe add a pinch of Rebecca DeMornay in there too.
