Rank the characters from most admirable to most deplorable.
My list would go as follows (not counting the girl, babies, or trivial characters, including Susannah's husband)
MOST LIKABLE
Susannah - the elder Stone sister sems like a very down to earth, good person. She's (seemingly) a loving wife, daughter, sister and mother. She never engages in any harassment of Meredith, she's very polite and caring.
Most admirable on screen moment: Gently/quietly sneaking into her mom's bed to cuddle with her, and show her love.
Most deplorable on screen moment: None that I can think of.
Brad - Brad didn't have much screen time, but with what little he did we can gather a few things. He's an EMT, and a hard working one (working on Christmas Eve). He's thoughtful, and caring, as shown by his still loving Amy months after a break up, his unease and reluctance when dancing with Meredith, etc, and when they rekindle their romance, at the end, the movie ends with their embrace. He's also very honest.
Most admirable on screen moment: Bringing Amy a thoughtful gift, and his polite manners when addressing the Stones.
Most deplorable on screen moment: If it even counts, mentioning he met Meredith at a bar. A slight faux pas.
Patrick - Patrick is a very considerate and calm demeanored person. he sympathizes with Meredith, and faults Amy for her unjust persecution of Meredith, defends Meredith from Sybil, and also is the only one (besides Ben) who genuinely trys to bond with Meredith. He's open, and frank with Julie.
Most admirable on screen moment: Helping a nervous, shunned Meredith make a meal.
Most deplorable on screen moment: getting overly offended at Meredith's dinner mistake/question, and turning on her when she, by name, calls for his support and understanding.
Kelly - The patriarch of the very liberal Stone family is on the surface a calm, fair, and polite man. He is a bit hen pecked, but, at the same time, it's the holidays, he is the host, and his evil wife is dying. He tries to keep the peace, although becomes angered at the dinner. Behind closed doors though, he is highly judgmental.
Most admirable on screen moment: Going to apologize to Meredith for his outburst, which, was even justified.
Most deplorable on screen moment: being too passive when Sybil and Amy are tormenting Meredith, which Everett calls him out on.
Julie - the adorable, beautiful, and earnest younger sister to Meredith, Julie is kind, and open. On the surface, she's perfect. She comes to her sisters aid, is polite and respectful to the Stones, yet, establishes herself early (to Amy). She's confident enough to ask taboo but honest questions at the dinner, and she's well mannered, in wake of Meredith's dinner wrecking flub. That said...she and Evertt spend more time wooing one another afterwards than they do looking for a distraught, emotional and isolated Meredith.
Most admirable on screen moment: Just arriving to bail out Meredith, and instantly winning over the Stones.
Most deplorable on screen moment: Falling in love woth Everett on their walk. Seriously. For a girl who's otherwise perfect...that is just wrong! Were not for that, she'd top the overall list.
Ben - The "wacky" black sheep of the Stone family. He's seemingly lazy, uninspired, laid back, and aloof. He says things that even the liberal, unconventional Stone's find to be too far. That said, he's the only Stone who actually went out of their way to make Meredith feel welcome (though his motives are called into question). He gives her sage advise, from telling her to relax, to returning Sybil's mug. Points for not sleeping with Meredith, I suppose?
Most admirable on screen moment: Going to console Meredith when she was at her lowest point.
Most deplorable on screen moment: Telling Everett that "he doesn't even love her" (Meredith) in front of Meredith. While true, it's rude, and cold, and embarrassing.
Meredith - I sympathise with Meredith. She means well. She dresses to impress, is polite, enthusiastic, tries to make amends....she really never does anything intentionally rude to the Stones, and is unfairly, and unjustly treated. In many ways, she handles it with a quiet, polite dignity. At the same time, she lets them bully her too much, she is too quick to concede defeat, calls her sister for help, and her stress is contagious and exhausting. And, she doesn't know when to shut up.
Most admirable on screen moment: Bringing the (unappreciated when given) presents for everyone, especially after the way she has been treated.
Most deplorable on screen moment: When she wouldn't shut up when Everett was trying to talk to her (though he's just as guilty) and shouted out "I WILL NOT MARRY YOU!" then throwing a pity party after he says he wasn't asking.
Everett - The "perfect" son and eldest Stone sibling that everyone seems to look towards as their example is, at first, ideal. He's straight laced, polite, successful, patient and commands the family's full respect. But, he also does little to help Meredith throughout the whole movie....from prepping her ahead of time, to never interjecting enough, to even leaving her to sink at the dinner table. Hell, when he went looking for his distraught would be fiancee, he put the moves on her sister! Given the first time we see him on screen and he rudely steals Meredith's phone and hangs up on her call, we should have seen through his charm, and seen another selfish Stone.
Most admirable on screen moment: Telling his family to give Mereditha fair chance, after she decides to check into the Inn. Or, in a twisted way, wanting to marry a woman he didn't actually love, because he loved his mother, and though (stupidly) it'd comfort her.
Most deplorable on screen moment: Betraying Meredith at the dinner debacle. Followed by swooning over her kid sister. You want to go with her to see the totem pole? Seriously, guy? Your would be fiancee might be DEAD for all you know.
Thad - The youngest Stone son, Thad is a tender hearted guy, who is also very affectionate. However, he's also snarky (exhibited by his, "Why is she shouting?" comment), and he's too easily wounded (the self thrown pity party at dinner). Overall, a nice, and good person, but, annoying.
Most admirable on screen moment: Trying, in private, to ask Everett not to make a mistake in marrying Meredith.
Most deplorable on screen moment: crying in his Turkey and Stuffing. Grow a pair.
Amy - Ahh, the youngest Stone child, and by far the worst. She's judgmental, cruel, spiteful, conniving, snarky, rude, entitled, spoiled, mocking, so basically she's an outright *beep* Because the word bitch isn't strong enough. She, unfairly, hates Meredith and sets the entire family against her PRIOR to Meredith's first impression. She and her Mom (and Thad) mock Meredith, judge her, patronize her, set her up.... she's basically just a bully.
Most admirable on screen moment: Crying at the self realization that she (Amy) has been an unfairly cruel witch to Meredith after opening her gift. Even then, she still can't force an apology, or admission of villainy.
Most deplorable on screen moment: her cruel antics to Meredith during the charades game, from implying Meredith will never get married, to accusing her of being a racist.
Sybil - Sybil is a cancer. Yes, I appreciate the irony. The overly opinionated, overly judgmental, overly rude and pushy Stone matriarch runs the household. She commands Kelly around, and her children's worst character traits all stem from her example. She's straight up VICIOUS to Meredith, and is entirely unapologetic about it. She's also a scheming, conniving hag, who immediately decides Julie is perfect for BEN, after she immediately deemed Meredith unfit for Everett. She's a promise welching, materialistic, secret hoarding bleeding liberal wench who leaves the world better off dead.
Most admirable on screen moment: Dying. Or, rather, being dead in the film's finale.
Most deplorable on screen moment: her outburst at dinner. Followed by her outburst over the coffee. Followed by her - oh Hell, she's the goddamned devil.
LEAST LIKABLE
