Meredith on the spectrum?

At the beginning of the film Meredith acts a little aspergery.

Can you describe two or three symptoms she displayed that support your observation?

I thought she was as well. One example is when they we're crying because they loved her gift, and she read it as sadness. It was clear they loved it. Another one was the dinner scene. It's common sense to not call someone challenged along with all the other things she said. One more example is also at the dinner scene. Sybil made a joke, even Julie was laughing. Meredith took it literally and went on and not seeing that everyone was uncomfortable. She seemed like she lacked social skills.

Oh that's a little unfair. After being made to feel like she could do nothing right, and knowing how much they disapproved of her, it's understandable that she would read their reaction to the gift as her, again, doing something wrong.

Also she just didn't have much of a sense of a sense of humour around these people who were constantly judging her - I understand that. It's hard to relax in that sort of situation and you tend to be more sensitive and take things more seriously.

When she was relaxed and uninhibited, as she was with Ben in the bar, she was a very different person and completely capable of being fun.

No, the family brought out situational anxiety in her. As the movie progressed she began to behave more awkwardly because she was getting more anxious dealing with them. She put her foot in her mouth big time and then she acted literally terror stricken when they were offended and in attack mode. The family was absolutely horrible. I hope that Mother's Cancer rotted her from the inside out. I know it's a character, but good lord.

reply

Not at all. I think she's just the type of person who becomes awkward and talks a lot when they are nervous. Then, the family automatically seemed to dislike her when she arrived, which made it worse.

It's an interesting theory. Meredith does seem to have trouble reading the room, and tends to just go on and on talking without letting others get a word in.
