So many bad reviews missing the point...

This is such a fantastically written and performed film, I am gobsmacked at all the hate. I'm wondering if people watched a different film?

The entire point is that the Stone family are an exceptionally close family unit, who have become extremely close through very difficult situations (from a profound disability to dealing with their mother's cancer the first time round). Breaking into a unit that strong is intimidating and very difficult - what's presented here is exactly what we all fear when we have to meet a partner's family for the first time.

The entire family are not horrible to her, only two of the family members are unpleasant to her - the youngest sister (who actually has already met her and formed a negative impression of her, which she has passed on to the others), and the mother who not only has high standards for her son (I can personally testify that this is common!) but knows she will die soon and wants to see her son happy. She's concerned about her son making a huge mistake. The rest of the family try to be pleasant to her, even though their first impression of her is that she's not right for Everett, and that she's not the type of person they'd want to spend time with.

SJP's performance is very good in my opinion. It's the only time I've ever seen her cast against type and she pulls it off. I find her uptight anxiety wholly believable. The rest of the cast are great too.

The script is beautifully written, full of astute observations and the central characters are mostly very three-dimensional.

This has been a favourite Christmas film of mine since I first saw it when it came out, long before I lost my mum to cancer this year. I always found that element of the film touching, but now I know how true and real it is too. Those scenes dealing with her cancer and her death absolutely break my heart now, but I will still watch this film every Christmas.

People are far too quick to label this as a bunch of nasty liberals, with token politically correct characters - I feel sorry for those people, as they're missing what is a very witty, cleverly written and beautifully real portrait of a close but still dysfunctional family (aren't they all?). I love it, and will continue to watch and recommend it.

I love it also. It relly gets to me. It's funny, it's touching and it sticks in your head. But maybe the fact that so many people hate it is a good thing? Because this film is so different than the usual overly sweet christmas movie, most people are turned off. But there are also people who really love this movie with a passion, and that is rare these days. So the fact that this film really splits people proved they made something very different, and for me very special.

And yes SJP is amazing in this. You can really feel what she is going through, and it is so well acted and written it's hard to watch at times. A really brave and great performance from her.

Both the comments above are spot on. It thought it really touching and funny christmas movie. One of my favourites.

I agree! This is one of my absolute favorite movies I seen it a hundred times and cry every time! I have no idea why so many ppl hate on it.

reply

I love this movie also.
I think it's at its best when they touch on the more sentimental parts and the moments of interaction between the family, not when they're at "war" with Meredith.

Yeah, SJP gave a really terrific performance. A brilliant melting of the icy powerful businesswoman to someone who just wants to be accepted and loved.

i had to go here after the 7th time watching this movie, just to see if there's any discussion i can jump in. and yes i agree with all the comments above.

the first time i watched this movie was when i was 13, i guess. now i'm 21. it's one of my favorite Christmas movies, i watch it every year. i've seen a lot of people missing the point of the movie, i feel sorry for them, they're missing too much.

reply

The only thing I missed was the approx 2 hours of my life I spent watching this terrible movie

reply

And yet you found the time to come on here and comment on this board.

reply

Oh yeah a whole 12 seconds I spent. Where do I ever find the time. Boy I really need to get a life and stop wasting so much time!

I do not understand the hate either. I love this movie so much! I put it in every Christmas. In my opinion, each & every character gave an amazing performance. It's kind of one of those movies you either love or don't like at all. My favorite scene is at the end when SJP gives everyone a picture of Diane Keaton pregnant with Dermont's character. I ball my eyes out every time haha.

reply

Actually, she is pregnant with Amy. Just saw it for the second time and I love that movie.

I'm surprised at the negative reviews. I guess I live in my own little world where everyone shares my views. I still look forward to it each year.

I really enjoyed this film. It's almost totally predictable and overly sentimental but even allowing for the fact I was a little drunk I think it's an OK film. Heck, I even enjoyed SJP an actress I've not really appreciated since LA Story & Flight of the Navigator.
