I think the point of the film was to portray the aliens as not having certain human traits. The thing is, they are not unique to humans, at least on Earth - plenty of animals sacrifice to save their offspring and experience depression if the offspring die or are lost. Nevertheless, human intellect has grown beyond that of animals and yet we retain certain instincts. What's wrong with that? Who knows where these aliens come from, how old their species is, the environment in which they evolved, if they actually have what we would perceive as physical bodies, or how they reproduce? Maybe they reproduce by budding like bacteria, or maybe they have physical bodies but their brains are more binary than ours, rendering them virtually incapable of emotions like love or compassion. I think that's the point: they are not like us; hence the term "alien".
