Did this film bomb at the B.O.??

I read it earned only 400.000-500.000 $...I'm surprised, I don't think it's a masterpiece, but anyway it deserved to earn much more!

One thing that I didn't like was the actor who played Leo, they needed someone with much more charisma.

Last I heard this movie was released to more theatres in Canada than any other Canadian film. And only in Canada I think. It obviously bombed. But when it comes to Canadian Box Office standards, something like a couple million at the box office is considered a hit up here. Look at Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, made I think only a few million or less, but apparently it's one of our 15 highest grossing films.

That's lots of classics out there that are Canadian, but no one actually realizes they're Canadian.

I would hardly call Porky's a Canadian film. I doubt 10% of the main cast was Canadian and and it was set, filmed, written and directed in the US.

reply

Well X-men 1, 2 and 3 were all filmed in Canada, Battlestar, FF 1 and 2 and you could go on forever... but you don't call those movies Canadian, but they were all filmed here.

The Score was also filmed in Canada and had some awesome firepower in it (de niro, norton). Taking Lives wasn't bad either.

Another movie that people don't realize is Canadian - A Christmas Story

Have you seen 'Bon cop, bad cop'? Its the first bi-lingual film in Canada, I saw it in theaters and I LOVED it!

No, BCBC is not the first bilingual film in Canada, and, while it was a major success in Quebec, it kinda bombed in the ROC.

I fully agree with you. I normally avoid our films too but only because the ones that used to be made were pretty bad--shots with the boom mic, bad acting (those who couldn't make it in American cinema), and poor production. This and Corner Gas has changed my mind on Canadian film and entertainment! We have always had the talent, now we have ways to showcase it.

I felt that way about Seinfeld and feel that way about the Office, so we all have shows that we cannot stand while others seem to love them.

I agree a very entertaining movie. Well written, well directed and acted, good story line, all the ingredients for success.

A half million dollars from Canadian theatres is by no means small. There are only 30 million people in the whole country. There are a little over 10 times that many people in the U.S.A. So the figures are very different. With DVD release you can be quite sure that this film did turn a small profit at least.

Just some extra info to add to this thread.

Films are considered to be native to the country that funded their original production, because without money, there is no film. Canada's Astral Films was the original producer of Porky's. In fact Porky's was considered to be the highest grossing Canadian film ever for many years. It still remains as the second highest grossing all Canadian production ever. Films such as The X-Men movies and First Blood were filmed in Canada sure, but they are not considered to be Canadian films. They were not produced by Canadian companies. Certainly the ideas for Porky's were from an American writer/director. However just because a film like the Oscar winning Crash was written and directed by a Canadian, doesn't make it a Canadian film. Nor is a Jim Carrey film considered to be Canadian because he is Canadian.

By the way, both The Boondock Saints and Juno are recent big hits that are considered to be American/Canadian productions.

Some suggestions for people who are interested. I challenge anyone to check these 2 films out. They will likely change your opinion that most Canadian films stink. Like any country, some terrible films are produced there. However they have some real gems as well.
The best Canadian film from the 2000's that few people know is - It's All Gone Pete Tong. Truly a hilarious, original, and interesting film. It is actually a Canadian/UK production.
The best 90's film from Canada that few people know in my view is - Exotica. A very dark, but yet quite sexy film that recieved many great reviews around the world. Including, "two enthusiastic thumbs up" from I think you know who.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!!

Atom Egoyan's Exotica? Great movie indeed - the atmosphere alone (and Mia Kirshner) makes it well worth watching.
