If Beba was suffering financially because of the economy in general, wouldn't her friends be, too? Or was it because she didn't have a husband? I sort of understood that Beba would not be in such dire straits if she hadn't failed at her various business ventures (conversation with her brother).

shareI got the idea it was her brother also. Didn't they talk about how they messed up with their mother's money? The economic crisis did not affect everyone equally. She must have had her monies tied up in risky investments that went down with the currency. They never really do explain how she ended up with no funds.
