I think I need to read the book

This was a beautiful film, but the ending really got to me. Why did the F. Murray character deny he knew the girl? I guess it was still the time of the Inquisition? Sh-t!!!! Hard to believe they actually burned people alive. Gabriel Byrne was so cool in this film. But ended up hot!!! bad joke
