Where was this movie filmed?

First, let me state that I thought "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" was an absolutely TERRIBLE movie, and the only reason I stayed with the film (in between my little cat naps) was that the filming location...whichever country that was, looked really good. Maybe Spain or Italy? Was it Peru?

Anyone know?
