Confused about the chronology (early scene with Marquesa, Viceroy)

Sorry if this was discussed already, but does the early scene, when the Marquesa comes to ask permission to the Viceroy to visit her daughter, occur before or after she has already met La Perichole? I noticed that La Perichole was sitting next to the Viceroy laughing at the Marquesa, but if this scene took place BEFORE she met the Marquesa it wouldn't make sense, because she wasn't yet the Viceroy's mistress. If this had happened AFTER she met the Marquesa, then why would she act so rudely after she had humbled herself apologetically for humiliating her in the theater? And she only apologized at the insistence of the Viceroy. I was wondering why the Viceroy would seem to respect the Marquesa but also insult her in such a short time span.

I already know that the entire film is told as a flashback during the priest's inquisition by the way.
