How did Mary McGluckian get to do this classic??

Who is she and how did she get to write and direct this classic novel? Her script is just PLAIN HORRIBLE. SHe has thes A-list actors talking in lines NOBODY, but NOBODY ever speaks. They are the MOST CONVOLUTED, intricately contrived lines which most of the actors, especially de Niro, CANNOT handle. The mangling was all around! Like Sofia Coppola's MARIE ANTOINETTE, what a waste of money and sets and costumes.
