What a missed opportunity to create a new iconic Stephen King car.

Director Mick Garris said in the commentary they he chose the Christine car over what King had written in the short story. I can't imagine King was happy with that, because if you read a lot of King, you know that when it matters he really puts some effort into describing the vehicles. In the story, he had Straub driving a 1968 Ford Mustang GT hatchback like in Bullitt, which gave you some insight into his character.

It's arguable that Garris would have looked like he was just leeching off of Bullitt instead of Christine, but if he was creative enough he could have made you forgot Steve McQueen drove it first.

I'd love to see a scene in a Stephen King movie with a used car lot in the background that's selling a '58 Fury, a gray Cadallic DeVille, a yellow VW Beetle, a red Cresswell truck, a semi with a Green Goblin head on the grill, a blue 1953 Buick Roadmaster and so on.

Garris could have added a Mustang to the lot if he hadn't been so silly.

-What you gonna see?
-Something that starts soon and looks good.
