I think he was suppose to appreciate his mom more??

She seemed kind of lousy though. I think it would have been better if he died at the beginning and when he cuts that deal at the end, his mom should have died at the hospital instead of several years later of natural causes.

That kind of made the deal, and therefore pretty much the entire movie irrelevant.

My dream... is to tear up your dream.

The mom, as seen in the movie, was a very good mom as it was shown through the birthday clips at the beginning. She was celebrating with his son. In fact, I would say they were close to each other.
The chip on the shoulder that the son was carrying was that the mom really reprimanded him when he changed his mind about riding the bullet. He was bothering her all the time about riding on it, but he changed his mind. This angered his mom. However, the mom later repented for reprimanding him over this. This was, I think, what drove them apart for some time.
The 2 years that she lived afterwards was necessary so that both could reconcile and make peace and it seemed that it worked out very well for both.
I don't necessarily think that he chose the death of his mom over his out of selfishness. In fact, as it was shown in the movie, it was he who was being selfish by continuously glorifying death and wanting to commit suicide. This is why his girlfriend reprimanded him for wanting to slash his wrist. His girlfriend told him that he was being selfish.
Choosing the death of him mom over his, although it appears to be selfish on his part, was the opposite. It showed that he really valued his own life and that living was worth it. Also, this is also why he really wanted to visit his mom in the hospital: to tell her that he loved her.

Dude, what are you smoking? He was selfish because he chose his own life over hers. He sold her out. Do you understand? He sold her life out. What kind of son would do that to their mom? And because of this, his character most likely went to hell when he died. He was a coward.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

It was made very clear in the movie that accepting death as a part of live, is a part of growing up. It´s like riding the bullet. Once you have accepted death as a normal part of life you would realize that the only answer is to choose his life over his moms live.
His mom would only be dissapointed if he chose otherwise because: what kind of life would she have as a widow and without her son?
You sir are selfish...
Besides that, the vision (his visions always were about fear of smth) he had about the guy pulling him into the coffin is the next step I think. Accepting that he will get old and die like his mom is also a part of life that needs to be accepted.
Good movie imo because I personally think our culture has it all wrong with the machines that keep people alive for months even though they basically have no brain functions. This culture doesnt respect death and only values life as if they will live forever on this planet and never die...

you must be smoking something cuz thats some backwards ass logic right there. stop making him to be some kind of good guy for doing what he did. HE SOLD HIS MOM OUT, WHY CANT YOU UNDERSTAND THIS?!?!?!

"I don't know what I would do without you." -The Mom, repeatedly throughout the movie. She chose for him long before he had to.
