This is the first movie I've walked out on in my life.

I have a rule, generally, that I will watch a movie to its conclusion, for better or worse. It's unfair to judge a movie without having seen the whole thing. But I found this movie-going experience awful. I went with my girlfriend and my roommate, and we were all pretty excited to see it. Well, my roommate fell asleep (TWICE!- He couldn't believe it was still going the second time he woke up!) and I pretended to suffer a stroke to get my girlfriend to agree to walk out with us.

I've seen it said just a few posts down, and I agree... The main character was totally irritating. The story was childish. The female lead, even, was boring. The visuals were ugly paper-mache. Sometimes artists take their visions too far. It happens for everyone. I'm sure Gondry is a talented guy, and will impress me again, but this was too much to take.

I sat through Lawnmower Man 2, for God's sake!

i'll give it to you i rented to movie and had to stop it, but watching it a second time through i was able to appreciate it...i was kinda forced to watch it for a class i had, but maybe give it another try...its hard but in the end it wasn't all bad...i guess the characters and animation just kinda grows on you

reply

I watched it when i was 14 and i loved it :D It was really creative.

reply

LOL...that was only two years ago.

BIG DEAL!

The first time I saw this movie, I had rented it off Netflix months ago. I was about half way through it when I loss interest. Gave it another try last night, and enjoyed it very much. It was one of those movies that needed a second chance for me to enjoy.

I have a "rule" too: Never listen to half witted movie criticism from half empty minds, especially if said person has paid to see movies like "Lawnmower Man 2."

reply

Let us hope that the topic starter is not over walking out of movies, because, who knows, maybe we'll be watching the same movie in the same theatre...At the same time...

reply

Why do these always start with "I have a rule to watch the whole movie..but.."? I'm starting to believe you're all one person.

Eat the Browniie!!

reply

yeah! good saying
that was funny...i will take the same rule
i think the movie is a masterpice

Everyone's entitled to their opinions, and I think his comment was more in gest than anything else.
I also agree with the OP here - I found this film very difficult to sit through, merely for the lack of character or true plot development. It seemed like an interchangable dream scene after another, where nothing new was learnt about the characters, where the majority of the animation was the same (since when is any dream exactly the same?) and when they dived into pseudo-science which was incorrect (Rapid Eye Movement is almost completely random, and hardly ever responds to what a person is dreaming. This would be an impossible study to even try).

Walking out, perhaps a little extreme (considering you paid for the damn tickets in the first place, though perhaps they made good roach material, I don't know). But how this film is rated a 7.5 is beyond me.

No, I'm not a sleep expert. Did I say that? Don't get me wrong, I've studied sleep from both a biological and psychological standpoint, but I never said that makes me an expert.
I mentioned dreams are often random - there are few instances of returning to the same scenario over and over and over and over again.
I did my research before watching the film, but it did nothing for me. So feel free to attack me once again, but pseudo-science is all in the eye of the beholder. You enjoy what you watch, that's fine. I was just expressing an opinion. If you want me to back it up with finely researched papers, you'll need to give me a little longer to reply.

Oh, and you can tell me multiple people who have EXACTLY the same dreams? Maybe it's because they watched the film, genius.

"Now that I've met you, would you object to ever seeing me again?"

Just out of curiosity - what's your favourite movie of all time? I can't wait for the answer. You seem like a Forest Gump/Shawshank Redemption kinda gal.

I can't tell if you're asking me or someone else in the reply. I don't think any single movie can be someone's favorite. It's like picking a favorite song. Context is very significant to how I respond to a given movie at a given time. I love a ton of movies for different reasons. I do love The Shawshank Redemption. But I don't always want to sit down with it. Recently, I've been able to watch The Prestige over and over. In fact, I think Christopher Nolan's whole body of work is really sharp. His weakest movie was probably Insomnia, and that's eminently watchable. I've been a big fan of Quentin Tarrentino. I love a lot of his stuff when it's my mood. Forrest Gump doesn't really do much for me. I think Quiz Show, Shawshank, or Pulp Fiction should have won Best Picture that year over Gump. I love the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I love The Incredibles.

I love a lot. I just hated the very terrible Science of Sleep.

And by the way I saw Lawnmower Man 2 when I was in 6th or 7th grade, so it's not really representative of my tastes. My friend had seen the first Lawnmower Man (I hadn't) and he wanted to see the sequel, and we felt cool getting into an R-Rated movie. Unless it was PG-13 and I made up that last part.

I loved it, i'm a boy if thats interesting to anyone. I just thought it was beautifully done, always interesting and visually appealing, and i loved Stephan and Stephanie, i don't know but their characters seemed so real compared to alot of other films where the romance is just ugh please, and i could identify with them. I think when i was younger i may have disliked this sort of film but now i see it and i just smile throughout it and i find it quite emotional as well, i was very impressed by it and it made me feel something that i haven't felt for a long time in my film watching. I think though that this film doesn't suit certain personalities, a personality that alot of people have maybe one which dislikes quirkyness and whimsicalness in life and in film, whereas i love it although as we all know there are different types and it can be done wrong. But Gondry has got it spot on with ESOTSM and this and its beautiful.
Better than Garden State anyway.

I think you should give it another try OP, although from reading your film preferences below it's not surprising this wouldn't seem to be your sort of thing. I was a bit underwhelmed on first viewing. The story is childlike and Stephan is at times irritating, I think that's the film's intention. The images from it have really stayed with me and I loved how the toys and scenes they were enacting were made as children would make them though you could appreciate also the real crafting skills used for most of them. And I bet you've never thought to recycle your plastics as the ocean?

So you broke your own rules, dragged your girlfriend out of the movie and then come to cry about it on the forums?
maybe you should follow another rule you probably have and dont rate movies you havent seen?
