DMX's acting

To be honest I was never thrilled about any movie that had DMX in it. Everything I ahd seen with him it in was pretty bad. So I was quite surprised in not only how good this film was but alsoin how well DMX did. Was anyone else surprised or feel this way?

No way, X makes the flick. Only Denzel plays a better bad guy. This is the exception to the rule that rappers cannot act. King David- “Excuse my back”

DMX did alot better in this movie than any other movie he has been in. I wasn't sure I should get this movie because Cradle 2 The Grave was terrible. So I was suprised it turned out as good as it is. DMX has improved so much. Could have been better but it was still good.

reply

Yep, "X" really plays a bad guy well. He made his character so believable in this movie.

Denzel would have KILLED this role.

I think Oscar nominated superstar Will Smith already proved that theory wrong more than a decade ago.

reply

I know I'm 10 years late...but NO Denzel does NOT play a better bad guy. Why do I say this....because he can play the bad guy, but he can NOT be "hood".

Jake you my n---- !! WOW Denzel, how original or hood did he sound saying that. I love Paul Walker but him saying "bro", 2,000 times in the Fast N Furious series of movies is in comparison.

reply

Didn't think that was all to fair GhostMint. Though the whole "rapper" in a movie thing is why overplayed, and I was hestitant to see this as well because of that, if DMX is honestly making a career change and is serious about acting (unlike the other dozens of rappers who are in it for the cash), then I'll watch his movie's with an open mind and won't judge him by it. I started watching this a little fearful, but soon couldn't keep my eyes off it. Great job by DMX, and I don't think anyone could play that part like himself (without adding a whole new factor, seeing Denzel [as good as he is] in this role would change it for me somehow).

your mental. Who would have done it better? Richard Dreyfuss? DMX did fine.

I saw a movie with DMX and David Segal and DMX was very good and this movie was very good. He is a much better then most actors of this genre. I would like to see him in a non action type role. I thnk he has a lot of potential. BUT I understand he is not going to make any more movies. Is that true?

reply

So far what i have heard about DMX is that he quit the Def Jam label because they were screwing him around and he quit music all together to go INTO movies. That's probably why we havn't seen DMX for a while because people are scared to take chances on rappers. DMX did his best job in this movie. But I would like to see what all he can bring to the table with his acting like what roles he can be limited to. BUT PLEASE NO MORE STEVEN SEAGAL MOVIES! PLEASE! It's like watching a manican from a department store act, he shows no emotion. His face is like Ben Steins voice in the Clear Eyes commercials.

reply

He did a good job, I still liked him more in Belly though.

I think this is DMX's best role so far. Cradle 2 The Grave and Exit Wounds weren't bad I think. They are just action flicks. Belly, well, it wasn't bad. I think King David was a more believable character than Tommy B (I am putting that in because it either said his surname was Brown or Bundy). His role wasn't that big in Romeo Must Die though. Whether or not he will continue to make music or make movies, he was great in this movie, and was a very good rapper too.

Rappers tend to have "one look" or heighten the emotion to one level, then can't express the range necessary or arent given lines they can emote feelings successfully. They can switch delivery pitches in hip-hop or turn a clever freestyle phrase, so much more range and belief is needed. You ever notice how bad Robert de Niro cries? Now look how well he toughens his look and extends intensity? Thats why rappers do well in urban dramas because it works toward their strength. Survival. Attitude.
Street-wise dominance. They've lived that life, and push themselves to do other things. In some cases, its successful. Jamie Foxx could perform comedy, sing a little and act. Eddie Murphy a little less successful with the singing. Will Smith and L.L. Cool J also made the transition. X probably needs to work at the supporting actor issue before he headlines.
Its the subtle things you need work with first.

yeah i just saw it and i was suprized that he did as well as he did in this movie. i thought the movie overall wasn't anything special, but i really liked dmx in this. i still find with his acting a bit ehhh, he looks sort of uncomfortable and akward at times, especially when he is delivering dialogue he he keeps moving his head, he can't really keep still. but he has an amazing screen presence, and you can't really train for that. look at a guy like orlando bloom, he is a good actor but he doesn't have any screen presence, something that could have made kingdom of heaven a good movie instead of the mediocre spending spree it was. i don't even think denzel would have been as good as dmx for king david. sure on paper denzel is obviously a better choice, and in training day and devil in a blue dress he played the bad guy really well, but the bad guys in those movies have a certain likeableness in their character that you are meant to like (to an extent). but king david is a character we should hate, yet dmx makes this guy appealing in a really sick way. i'm sure denzel could do it, but some how i don't think i'd buy denzel doing it.

Not so surprised by DMX cos' i think he is a very good actor.Considering where he grew up,that he is an excellent gangsta rapper, and was not an actor originally,i only have to give him thumps up.He has such a great persona,he is loyal to religion, and contrary to what someone else might think,he is a good role model and i would like to see him top class real soon...

reply

yo word? a role model.

If u r so clever u must know he is also arrested for marijuana, overspeeding etc. I'm talking about the lyrics stranger,in some of his songs are very good. Now you can try to write some lyrics from other songs to make me lose face

reply

you're right. I suppose his words would reveal to us how he wants we, the people, to feel about him.

I can't possibly make you lose face! Only those who feel guilty would defend themselves.

reply

I dont care how he presents himself, good or bad-but his music is damn good. And who said anything about defending himself? I am defending only when i play soccer...

word. I was just saying that you replied wisely. Some people get really weird on these message boards, and go off on some sort of personal tangent, revealing too much unnecessary info, and get all personal.

can't say I really care for dmx though.

reply

DMX said himself that he was done making music, and he was only doing movies now!!!
He said he woud try to do the same in the movie business, as he did in the music business...

And he is brilliant in Never Die Alone, he is very evil and terrifying...
Well i dont think he was better than Denzel in Training Day, but he was more evil... But my favorite is still Wesley Snipes as Nino Brown in New Jack City!!!

I thought he was actually pretty good in this movie.

His character is deeper here than it was in his action flicks.

King David is one viscious mother *beep*

reply

this movie was crappity, crap, crap!!!!! and he was bad as well so stop lying to yourselves.

reply

I'm sorry, I still say DMX can't act.

reply

truth be told dmx plays himself in every movie and for this he can be very enjoyable depending on the writers of the film this along with his performance in belly is a favourite amongst many other great hip hopcharaciture performances he's just so slick and sinister probably much like old earl himself

reply

DMx was amazing in this film. I watched this movie this morning I haven't seen it in a while. It was a great movie from beginning to end.
