Father's death

I really enjoyed this movie a lot, but one minor thing bugged me when it was over. What the heck happened to Lee's father? In the flashback near the end (when Kang finds Lee's diaries) it shows the tragedies that befell the people he loved, and I got the fate of his mother and girlfriend, but his father stumped me. First his arm is suddenly gone, and then he gets stabbed in the head with a miniature umbrella? Did anyone make more sense out of that than I did? If so, please enlighten me.

The mining incident and the umbrella incident happened at different times. As far as I can tell, Lee's father was abusive to his wife and son due to the deppresion caused by his lost limb. As young Lee is seen playing with his umbrellas, we can see his father come at him,and it is implied that he is about to hurt him. We can also see Lee's slightly-beaten mom cling to the father's leg, attempting to hold him back. Apparently, in the ensuing struggle with Lee, the father falls onto his son's umbrellas, causing his forehead to be penetrated. The trauma that Lee felt after causing his father's death was one of the facets that triggered his methamphetamine-addled insanity.

OR what we saw at the end of the movies was those few seconds of brain activity that occur in a brain after the body has shut down, and is thought to be much like REM sleep. Theoretically, the aliens could just be a Freudian rationalization mechanism created by Lee in his last moments of consciousness in order to allow him to cope with the horrific things he had done.

Or there were aliens.
