I thought this movie was an hilarious mix of genres. A weird sci-fi flick combined with a crime story, a bit of kung-fu thrown in, plus a quirky romance. I also liked the little nods to "La Strada" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" in the midst of this crazy film.
And the theme music that was used to tie it all together - a sad, thoughtful piece to accompany scenes played in slow motion... so over the top... Pure gold.
Can anybody recommend other Korean films worth checking out? This is the first Korean movie I've seen, and I'd like to see some more if they're anything like this one.
This is my personal opinion. But, I believe everyone has a different taste and preference. So, it entirely depends on you whether you take my opinion seriously or not.
Some Korean films I'd recommend are as follows ;
1. Chanwook Park's two films based on the theme of revenge. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. & Oldboy. You may have heard of oldboy since it won the Grand Jury's prize at Cannes film festival. Though two films are brilliant and stylish in every sense, while the former is very dry and minimalist, the latter is not. I would like you to watch Oldboy first.(Personally, I believe that both are more than enjoyable.)
2. Oasis This is a film about love between a three time ex-prisoner and a cebral palsy. the film is very bitter but also very powerful making us think what the true love is. I cannot explain it well enough to intrigue you. But, please have a look at some comments on the film. You will soon find that the film is worth watching.
3. My sassy girl This film has been very popular not only in Korea but also in Hongkong, Singapore, China and many other Asian countries. Also the remake right was bought by an Hollywood film making company.
I briefly listed some films I would like to recommend. I did not go into the detailed plot summary. I listed the aforementioned films because they are quite likely to reach everyone's minds beyond where they live, what they do ....
However, if you are still interested in Korean films after watching them, I would like to recommend some others
Il Mare (aka. Siworae, Korean title) : remake right also bought by Hollywood JSA (aka. Joint Security Area) Memories of Murder Take care of my cat (This may be boring to many western cinema-goers... but I really loved it) Kideok Kim's films (e.g. spring, summer, autumn, winter and spring, the isle, samaria and unknown address.... Kim has been in the centre of controversy so you may not like his films. But it has to be admitted that he's one of the favourites by many European film reviewers.)
that's enough, I suppose. Hope you'll enjoy Korean films. I'll answer any of your questions if you email me. Happy Christmas.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your taking the time to offer suggestions. I look forward to watching these films and learning more about Korean cinema.
1) Oldboy 2) My Sassy Girl 3) A Tale Of Two Sisters 4) Marathon (aka Running Boy) 5) Save The Green Planet 6) Il Mare 7) Windstruck 8) Failan 9) Memories of Murder 10) Taegugki
Just for the Korean flavoured absuridity, if you like the comedy in STGP, you'd love ATGS. Nothing beats the moment where Bulldog coerces the guy in the yellow shirt to fight the bully...and WIN.
"That movie has warped my fragile little mind!" -Eric Cartman, "South Park"
You should really see the Korean movie 3-Iron. It's less zany than Save the Green Planet, but the tone is similar. Basically it's about two lovers who break into houses while the owners are out of town. They don't steal anything, they just sleep there for a few days, tidy up a bit, then go on to the next house. Meanwhile, an evil businessman guy is after them and they're fleeing from the law. No words are exchanged between the two main characters--most of the story is told through images.
