Jang Joon-Hwan's next movie

...will be called 'Fartman.'
I am so not kidding. It's about a little boy who farts so often and whose farts are so smelly that he becomes isolated, and even his parents find it hard to endure the smell. In the end, he decides to go into self-training and meditation at a mountain and returns as a superhero.

Q. When is this going to be made?
A. It's been delayed. I was going to write the script quickly last fall and make it this year, so we could release it next year, but the script has been delaying us. We'll crank in next spring, and since the CGI and editing will take us a while, I think the release is probably going to be summer 2008.

Q. This idea has been in your head for about ten years, right? You seem to hang on to ideas.
A. I wrote the synopsis when I became a professor's assistant after graduating from the Film Academy...it's a shame when there's something good and you can't make it. It's nowhere except in my head. I want to show it to people.

Q. Is the title decided?
A. It's not 100% final, but I think we'll go with Fartman. Sounds best in Korean.

Q. What was the other project you were doing at Sidus productions?
It's a fake documentary, called 'The Little Mermaid.' We're assuming that mermaids are coming out onto the shore. The story follows an investigation of the corpse of a mermaid discovered at the beach in Pusan; the mermaid was a princess of Atlantis. I was thinking of a low-budget digital movie with interviews and undercover investigations, but making the mermaids turned out to be difficult, so I've put the idea on the shelf for now...

Q. Mr. Cha Seung-jae (rep. of Sidus productions) once said that, 'Jang Joon-Hwan is Mozart, Bong Joon-ho (director of 'Memories of Murder' and 'The Host') is Salieri.' Do you find the analogy uncomfortable?
A. I'm not the genius, Bong is. He just said that because Bong is so diligent-not really what you'd expect from a genius at all. As for me, I know the road I have to take, I just can't finish it easily. When I work I pull out my hair and abuse myself. A real genius wouldn't do that.

(excerpts from Jang Joon-Hwan's interview at Cine 21 magazine)

I cannot wait for this.
The interview was in September, and he said that they were still working on the script, so they probably haven't begun shooting yet but... whatever.

I told you already the law is unto you, Bmelanie. Why do you keep crapping all over the internet with your disgusting "messages".

Indeed you are not *SLIGHTLY* disturbed. Hunger I understand, but offering your services to underaged boys in exchange for a pair of red silk stokings, now, is that nice?

SHAME ON YOU, Melanie, you're a whore, and, by the way, the fact that your father was the gay whore of the town does not excuse you, either.

Sigh, more uninspired abuse from the malignant mangalitza, oh I almost forgot
mangalitza it appears that you have made a spelling error slightly hypocritical
considering the fact that even the slightest mistake in grammar and vocabulary
inspires you to criticize someone. However I digress it's spelt "stockings" you
illiterate bastard.

Whats up with that guy Mongoloitza does he just hate everything. Anyway, I just finished watching this movie (Green Planet) and felt compelled to post something about it. THIS MOVIE #$%*^&( ROCKS!!! Definitley will be keeping my eyes peeled for the next one by this guy.

D:)

reply

Hmm. Does sound a bit disappointing after the fantastic Save the Green Planet. I've had high hopes for his next film, but just seems like a terrible idea to base a film on.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me too. I loved StGP, but this new idea reminds me of the premise for the film "Thunderpants", and that film is in IMDb's bottom 100. I realise that doesn't really mean anything, but still...

reply

I bet before you watched Save The Green Planet if you knew / read the premise you'd have said it sounded like a weak / stupid idea. This is South Korean film making were talking about, not orthodox Hollywood (i.e. Thunderpants).

The premise sounds absurd, but Far Eastern film makers have a knack of making stupid / silly / odd / unorthodox ideas work (Save The Green Planet included. Or the Ringu films. On paper the idea shouldn't have worked, but the Far East seem to pull them off. Hollywood more often than not don't have the knack. Look at anime. A lot of that material shouldn't even work, but it often does. Think about it.).

Hovis!

reply

Well, you know, I'm content to wait and see, and I probably will see, if he ever actually makes another film.

Lots of Far Eastern filmmakers are just as capable of churning out *beep* as anyone else, you know. Jang Joon-Hwan only appears to have one film to his credit, so he's going to have to prove he's not a one-hit wonder. Problem is, a fair few Westerners liked STGP, but no-one in South Korea did, so will that limit his freedom to do what he wants? Who knows?

(BTW, Thunderpants wasn't a Hollywood film - it was British.)

Any news?

"This is Fu Manchu. Once again the world is at my mercy."

reply

Sorry, I dunno. He married Moon So-Ri (Oasis) a while back, but apart from that...
