I think the most violent thing in the movie was like someone getting hit in the shin with something.

Snap, Crackle...CALL AN AMBULANCE!

And that was shown Hostel/Saw style? But basically you admit you were wrong. Great. Glad you can admit it.

Nothing amazing ever happens here.

yes, watched the whole thing.

i think what i meant was the movie was horrible and it had torture porn in it.
not that the whole film was horrible torture porn.

although quite a bit of it is the guy strapped to a chair being tortured.
is it a torture porn film, like saw or hostel? no.

reply

This is not a Miike film, it's Korean.

This film had one bit of violence which I thought was horrible; the feet scrubbing scene. Apart from that there is no violence and the whole movie is interesting and meaningful.

It is not torture porn. I hate the torture porn genre, and this is definitely not in it. It is one of my favourite films of all time. I find it sad, funny, and innovative.

The violence in this film was too much for me, too. I think that editing out 85% of the scenes of severe pain infliction would have still gotten that point across and improved the overall film a lot. That said, there's far more to this novel and interesting movie than simple "torture porn."

Fair enough. I loved this movie, but I too was surprised and a little shocked by the torture scenes. They were less gory than the average Hollywood horror flick, but the violence felt very visceral and disturbing imho (if you haven't watched the movie yet, think "Misery" with Kathy Bates).

That being said, I didn't find the violence excessive or tasteless. It was limited to a few scenes, which helped move the plot forward and weren't just shocking for shock's sake (or torture porn, as you put it). The rest of the movie was an emotional rollercoaster that made me laugh at one scene and bawl at the next. And I don't cry easily, mind you.

The shock and horror moments were merely another stop on this wild rollercoaster ride. But I fully understand how they could seem a little too much, especially if you go into this movie expecting a dramatic comedy (and nothing else). It's so much more than that. It's a little bit of everything. The only thing it's definitely not is family friendly. There is a reason that this movie is rated 18+ in most countries.
