Good korean movies

at the moment i've only seen 5 korean films

Oldboy
Sympathy for mr. vengeance
Save the green planet
A tale of two sisters
Shiri - need to see again because i can't remmember much of it -

i've already got my eyes on sympathy for lady vengeance, memories of murder, a bittersweet life, and JSA. i now have a craving to see many more great korean films. can anyone recommend any?

Last movie seen
-Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance- 9/10

reply

shiri isnt really good, especially by todays standards, its okay

I recommend you see

taegukgi hwinalrimyeo - excellent war drama

JSA - excellent follow up to taegukgi

bittersweet life - nice action noir

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring - basically anything ki-duk kim but this is notably his best work, see the beauty of korean natural landscapes

memories of murder - excellent black comedy / crime movie, somewhat reminiscent of fargo (hick towns -> get that tractor off the crime scene! ascchh your tracks are going to ruin any foot prints!) lol!

My favorite Korean movies are Oldboy, Save the Green Planet, A Bittersweet Life, Shiri and My Sassy Girl. Korean cinema is ingenious.

Attack The Gas Station was a great movie too.

i'm a huuuuuuuuuge fan of east-asian cinema, mainly Japanese and South Korean. My favourite South Korean movies have to be:

A Bittersweet Life
Save the Green Planet
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Wig
3-Iron
The Dollmaster
Three Extremes: Cut (I know the other two are Chinese n Japanese but apparently the three films were made with Korean money and Korean audiences in mind)

I didn't really like Old Boy i was quite disappointed. I liked the action (or lack of) but i felt all the hype n trailers about it made a false image for it- it was just basically about sex! But i loved the hammer bit :P

*AMERICAN REMAKES SUCK*....support EA originals

reply

I back three extremes a hundred percent.
Amazing cinematography.

Everyone's mentioned most of the good films I've seen... except Spider Forest, which is an interesting, very creepy thriller. The Coast Guard was also pretty good. Ki-Duk Kim has done some great stuff, but I'll stand alone on this one and admit that I hated Bad Guy. That's just me...

reply

And what about "My Sassy Girl"?

IMHO one of the best romantic comedies of all time.

reply

Try "Tell Me Something"...it's like a Korean answer to "Seven".

I'm not conceited, I'm just better than everybody else!

reply

I agree with all the other replies, Real Fiction is great too, if a little bit of a *beep* And The Harmonium In My Memory is cool if you like romances.

Still can't beat Oldboy though - definately my all time fave!

Pretty Pigeon!

reply

most people have mentioned all the obvious, but one in particular i think has been missed. I think Take Care of My Cat is one of the finest films out there. Check it Out.

reply

Memories of Murder is great. Makes the audience put their 'thinking caps' on. Noir, mysterious and raw. very well-made, and never too pretentious.

Of course, the Vengeance Trilogy by Park and all of Ki-Duk Kim's films are cutting edge.

I also enjoyed the Korean take on 'Dangerous Liaisons' (Korean title: 'Scandal'). Gorgeous ladies, beautiful sets & locations, eros and good acting in a well-executed costume drama.

reply

I have to mention Lee Chang-Dong. All of his movies (three so far) are great but "Peppermint Candy" is an utter masterpiece. A very raw and emotional experience that captures life in South Korea perfectly and served as an inspiration to "Irreversible".

reply

Truly, I agree with you.
Peppermint Candy is a true masterpiece.

Has anyone mentioned Oasis? or Marathon?
They're good too.
