U.S. passes England in world rankings

U.S. is sixth, Mexico fifth, Czech Republic fourth, Netherlands third, Argentina second, Brazil first.

Wow, two from South American, two from North America in the top six, and only two from Europe?? And where's England??

Yes, I see England playing powerful sides like Azerbaijan, Wales, Northern Ireland, etc. And you talk about the U.S. playing Honduras and Jamaica (who was at the 1998 World Cup. When did Wales or Northern Ireland or Azerbaijan make a World Cup last?)

15 years ago, the United States had trouble beating the Hondurases and Jamaicas of the world.

USA about 21st and Portugal third?? LOL, remember the 2002 World Cup? I remember USA kicking Portgal's butt all over the field, leading 3-0 in the first half. Then I liked how Portugal tried to fix the match with South Korea, but luckily, South Korea wouldn't have any of it. Germany was lucky to beat the USA in the last World Cup. Even FourFourTwo said so. England is not the fourth best team in the world, and you'll see why at the World Cup ... if they make it.

PrivateBits knows what s/he's talking about - you, unfortunately do not..

Rankings don't mean *beep* - Points are garnered due to the multitude of games played - the US play *many* easy games, and so get more points. Azerbijan, Wales, Northern Ireland, etc *are* easy to beat, but by that I mean easy for a team like England to beat them - it's all relative. They are easy for us, 'cos we have a competent football side; they'd be difficult for the US because you have a distinctly average side.
Also, we haven't played as many games as the US and this therefore affects our ranking.

Granted, you had a good World Cup in 2002 - but every average team can have a freak moment of glory - remember Bulgaria & Sweden in 1994?

So hold on to that bogus ranking - it's the only time that your team will show any kind of superiority in Football to England.. I sincerely hope you're in our group - you will get *spanked*.

And deep down, you know it..

I'm shocked you remember 1994 - I don't recall England being there.

I too, hope England is in the USA's group. After all, the USA showed their superior side by winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup with almost their B team, while England, and all of Europe, saw a WEAK Greece team win Euro.

And may I remind you that 2002 wasn't the first time the USA had made it out of the first round. 1994 it happened too (but England wasn't there). Twice in three World Cups progressing to the second round? I'll take it, since England hasn't even made the last three World Cups and have some work to do to make Germany 2006. Go Poland!!

I certainly do remember 1994 - I remember the US team being there only because they were the hosts and therefore did not need to qualify. (Plus home advantage ensured that they progressed beyond the first round)

"..the USA showed their superior side by winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup with almost their B team.."

CONCACAF Gold Cup winners - yes, the US beat that well known footballing giant Panama and couldn't even beat them over 120 mins - they won via the lottery that is the penalty shootout. I'm pretty sure the England under-21 side could walk the Gold Cup.

"England hasn't even made the last three World Cups and have some work to do to make Germany 2006."

Are you sure about that?
Fair enough, in 1994 we didn't qualify, but:
1998 - Last 16
2002 - Quarter Finals
2006(Qualification) - Currently 2nd in group on 16 points, 2 points behind Poland, England undefeated in the group with a game in hand..

Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased you're showing a great deal of passion towards your national team - you live in a country where football is a minority sport, but please don't try to infer that the US have a better side than England - 'cos that just ain't true..

OK, I'll admit, the USA is not superior to England. Inferior? I wouldn't say that either. Both nations are on a similar playing level. That's not easy for European nations to admit, just as it's not easy for the USA to admit South America and Europe have many great basketball nations, in some instances, maybe equal to the USA.

I hate it that is like that for the USA. To play crappy teams all the time. USA will never get the experience they need to get better. England on the other hand are not a very good team it seems. I think maybe they should bring Beckham back, but I dont know maybe the team mates would get jealous of him or something. It seems that the U-21 England team is better then the England Seniors.

this is complete rubish- america are by no means any where close to being a good squad... look at this world cup! come on to compare who america has to face and who england have to face is to look at two completely different things. america plays teams that are horrible while england play the best in the world. n. ireland are rocking their group as is scotland who are playing teams like Italy and France... Rep. of Ireland are also doing great! This is coming from an American soccer fanatic by the way.

What kind of world rankings are we talking about here? I only know this one:

1 Italy
2 Argentina
3 Brazil
4 France
5 Germany
.
.

29 USA

Anyway, the film makes beating England look like a great achivement. Even little San Marino scored against England and they nearly embarassed Ireland a few month ago. A bit luck and things like that can happen. Besides of a few years in the 60ies when they won the WC in their own country England has always been and still is a mediocre side. Overrated individual players who don't form a team and don't have the mental strength to win a PSO. Right now it is questionable if they are even going to qualify for the EM even though they play against non-professional teams as Andorra.

And the US football team? They only ever win against crap teams and cheap South American sides but they don't stand a chance against the great European teams such as Italy, Germany or France or the top South American teams like Brazil and Argentina.

A tie against the reigning World Cup champions in the World Cup and a 1-0 loss to the runner up in 2002 in the quarter finals seem to tell otherwise.

Someone stated this opinion earlier on the thread. I would like to let this person know that Sweden has an excellent team and the Bulgarians have an ok squad.

What a mug you obviously know nothing about the game! America done better 3 times ha ha nice we won the World Cup in 66. We have the best domestic league in the world the Premiership that you Americans watch more than your own MLS I tried to watch your final last season and it was terrible football and worse than League two football (4th division of you dont know) We have clubs in our 3rd tier getting 3o.ooo fans per week in a country a fraction of the size of yours.

So Americans dont come on hear giving it he mouth because we 25 odd days we will show you how good we are.

Despite this the US have some good players Dempsey, Donovan, Friedel and will always do well in a country with the size of the population you have it would be stupid to think that if the game was played from an early age and the popularity improved you would eventually have a good side worthy of competing with the best and maybe winning the World Cup but this is a long way off.

As for the ranking they mean *beep* after the 98 world cup Brazil were still top of them even thou France beat them and also Mexico are always high as they play crap counties and win games.

I would never claim to be better at Baseball, Basketball or American football as we clearly are not so do not try and insult how good we are at our national sport we live and breath this game I personally have organised training and games 5 days a week and the same with alot of people in this country.

If only you americans got the game and had the same passion then you could be a world heavy weight but at the moment no where near. Good luck in the World Cup I would fancy yourselfs to come 2nd in the group behind us and then lose to Germany in the 2nds half.

But as this film shows football is great because on their day anyone can beat anyone!
