World Cup Games before going to Brazil

The film gives the impression that there was no US team before the tryouts,
but some of these guys must have played in the games against Mexico and Cuba to qualify for the finals,
does anyone know if the try-out game actually happened, or did it take place before the qualifying games?

I do understand that facts are changed to help the story
like Mortensens FA Cup hat-trick being stated as being 3 years earlier when it was not to happen for 3 years in the future,

The qualification was played in 1949 in a tournament in Mexico City, there were two spots to be played between Mexico, The United States and Cuba, Mexico won all their matches quite easily and USA claimed the second spot after one tie and one victory over Cuba.
Many members of the 1950 USA Team played in that tournament, so the movie gets the facts wrong saying there was no team before 1950, as they do with the world cup saying the opening game of the USA was against England. It would have been a better film if the film has payed attention to those easy to find details.
