5X2 Vs Irreversible

I find it hard to believe how different these two films are considering they are both French films layed chronologically backwards, with a rape scene being important in the story.

Its almost like the director has been given these Irreversible similarities, but informed to make the story his own.

Discuss?

When I saw this movie, the scene with the wedding party and the girl getting 'raped' indeed reminded me of Irreversible a lot. I guess Irreversible came about two years before 5 X 2, so it could probably be possible that there is some influence. But without some research you still can't be sure who got the idea first.

And, of course, on overall 5 X 2 is a lot different and definitely did not try to top the other movie in shock effect. Irreversible really makes you feel sick, but Ozon's movie is just a bit sad and thoughtful...

does anyone know why movie is called 5 times 2?

reply

It's called 5 x 2 because there are 5 segments each involving two people:

1. divorce/rape
2. dinner party
3. birth of the child
4. marriage
5. Italian resort

reply

I think it's called "5 x 2" because it's about two people married for five years.

reply

I think you're right : the 5 sequences each represent a year.

This was my interpretation also, but it's interesting to read other people's take on it.

When I first read the synopsis for 5x2 I thought that it would be similar to Irreversible but it turned out that the two are really quite different. I think the most important thing to identify is that Irreversible was infinitely more fast-paced and it explored the events more rather than the characters like in 5x2. Personally, I preferred Irreversible because it left a really wistful and guilty aftertaste - such a happy ending yet you know it's all an illusion: the true ending to the story is horrifically tragic. With 5x2 I kind of missed the point and didn't understand it so much, maybe I need it explained to me again. I don't think that Ozon was trying to copy Irreversible at all though, the two are so stylistically different that it's almost impossible.

I thought Irreversible had more purpose, and was probably better put together, but then 5x2 had a bit more humanity about it. Irreversible is all about, well not so much inhumanity, but slightly disturbed humans who get pushed over the edge.

I think Irreversible has much more of a message (and isn't subtle about it at all. It tries to hammer its message into you, like in the early scene in the Rectum). 5x2 is much more about the characters, I quite liked the acting. It also reminded me of Wong Kar Wai. The songs that were used from episode to episode for example. The bittersweetness of the love story. etc.

But yeah, not sure if there is much of a point to 5x2, perhaps it tries to show how love changes over time, how people change, by playing backwards it puts an emphasis on the changes. Love is not (always) forever.

Not sure how I'd rate this movie though. I liked Irreversible more, but both were quite enjoyable (well, if the word enjoyable can be applied to Irreversible). Should watch both again.

They're both told backwards, but that's the only similarity to me. "5X2" is a great, sensible film, while "Irreversible" is an exercise in bad taste, made just for shock factor.

That's funny, it didn't shock me in the least. It was tragic and unsettling, but so is much that goes on in the real world.

Yep, Irréversibe and 5x2 are quite different films. The only thing they have in common is that they are french films whose stories are told backwards, in reverse chronological order. Otherwise they are as different as Love Story vs Se7en.
I wouldn't even mention the rape scene as a common aspect because they are quite different. In Irréversible, Monica Bellucci's character is brutally sodomized and raped by a stranger while in 5x2 after the "raping", Gilles looks way more demolished and defeated than Marion. He even says, "You won, as always". Besides let's no forget they both went to the Hotel in order to "shag" for the last time.

I liked both movies for different and similar reasons at the same time. IMO Irrevérsible is the best film of both, though.

great backwards films = happy end, mirrors facing mirrors

No such violence in this film; still it shows how people get emotional scars.
