I might have misheard, but I thought he said that he'd flown into France the day of his encounter with Marion and that he was leaving for America the following day. If so, what was he doing at a hotel in the country? One member on this board mentioned a sex scene (presumably this one) as being 'technically a fantasy', while others have seen the scene as being a real indiscretion by Marion which was a primary cause of the relationship's deterioration. I wonder what your thoughts are.

It was a very odd scene. It's hard to tell whether the guy was a proto-rapist or whether he was reading very strong signals from Marion. It's weird that she would, after what appeared to be a very happy wedding, suddenly start enthusiastically engaging with a chance and very transient encounter. It's odd that she then goes back and delightedly tells her near comatose husband how much she loves him.

A fantasy actually makes a lot more sense although I must admit that did not occur to me at the time.

She is only trying to convince herself that she loves him.
