Gilles possible homosexuality (spoiler alert!)

IMO, Gilles is a closeted homosexual who didn't have the guts to assume it and live a happy life. He blames his wife for this. And that's why they become so unhappy.

There are clues all over the movie, on all segments to support this. Here are some of them.

1. He prefers anal sex.
2. At the dinner scene, when everybody is talking about cheating, he reveals his fantasy about men. Moreover, he envys his brother and flirts with his brother's boyfriend.
3. He doesnt want to make sex with his wife at their wedding night, not because he is drunk, but because he is not really interested in women.

Did somebody else think about this possibility?

I noticed 'No.2' but not sure about the others. I think Gilles was just dead tired after the dinner celebrations. However, there is still a possibility that he is a closeted one.

I think Gilles tells his true gay sex exprience rather than fantasy in the dinner scene.
But perhaps he just feels bored with his wife?

I think you're just overanalyzing... people tend to do that with every "straight" film by a gay director. Anyway, everyone's entitled to their opinions.

I am an island. I am bloody Ibiza!

I didn't get that feeling during the movie, but I can see why you'd think that. There could be a definite possibility.

Exactly my take on it. He's taking his frustration out on her and won't admit it to himself. I was surprised that everyone didn't think that. I was also surprised that there wasn't something that spelled that out at the end.

That is the only the thing I can think of that explains his behavior, except that he is also an a$$4013.

I'm also surprised that everyone here is judging her so badly. I thought she was great (and hot) and he was a total jerk. I don't even think the affair with the American really happened, and even if it did that isn't nearly as bad as the way he treated her.

I thought about it and consider it a possibility. The film invites theories about why Gilles behaves as he does, especially sexually and when his wife is in childbirth. This is one theory. But I wouldn't consider it "the solution" since I don't think it's very explicit in the film.

I don't think the movie is meant to be so black-and-white that we are to believe he's a closet homosexual, although it is clear that the movie deliberately introduces subtle ambiguity certain places. In real life, I'm told that many people are not purely hetero or homo but somewhere in between on a sliding scale, mostly in one end of the scale but sometimes with a hint of the other. In my opinion, the film demonstrates such a character. But I think we are barking up the wrong tree. He is so clearly egocentric and focused exclusively on his own desires; he doesn't care what others want or like; he is emotionally tied up in a knot; he hurts those who are closest to him, either because he doesn't notice it or because he doesn't care. If he is too tired for intimacy on their wedding night, then to hell with his new wife. If she needs his presence for giving birth, then to hell with it all. If he wants sex right after their divorce, then to hell with his ex-wife's regretting it or not. He doesn't give any love or affection. He just takes. It is tempting to call him an idiot or bastard, but we are not offered any explanation to why he is like that, so it's difficult to judge him. On the other hand, his wife just floats along, accepting it all, or rather lack of anything interesting. She falls for a man who seems powerful without noticing that he is cold throughout.

I think that Gilles is heterosexual who just happens to be sex-crazed and would probably be willing to do it with either male or female. He simply wants his sexual desires and fantasies fulfilled. But still,he is not a homosexual or bisexual.
