What the hell was wrong with the French?

It seems like if they would have gotten a good deal from the Germans maybe the French would have handed over their fleet. I think the British were right to sink the fleet and take the French navy. Later the French scuttled much of their remaining fleet, but if they were really with the allies they should have sailed it to Britain or fought with the allies.

A very interesting episode.
