I have gotten a completely different opinion about Gareth than most.
To me he did not want Cirque enough, he did not desire spot enough to want to fully engage and prove himself. Providing he was going through some very difficult family times as well as personal demons but the line had to be drawn and for benefit of the show he was excluded.
What makes Cirque Du Soleil so amazing is how far it goes beyond traditional circus. That kind of bench mark is often met with almost unrealistic targets that make Cirque performances what they are. Every participant must be able to act, dance and perform all at the same time.
I am a huge Cirque fan but even though I recognize when bad decisions were done. In this show, for example... that whole trapeze situation... for better or for worse they have integrated it into the show and last time I watched Varekai DVD I was very tempted to fast forward through it. In other words Cirque does not always hit high notes.
What happened with Gareth is very unfortunate but he was very unprepared along with Ashley. That is not because they were bad... its just that they were not good enough. When paired up against professionals their inexperience and slow progress stood out quite substantially so plug was pulled.
