I am confused by the accents

They seem all over the place

I heard some Irish brogue and sort of Bostonish. It's supposed to be a bit of a melting pot so I wasn't too distracted by the accents.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

I grew up in Vermont, about 75 miles from the location of fictional Grover's Corners, N.H. The citizens of New Hampshire have accents not identical but quite similar to those in Vermont and many of the characters in this film -- even Paul Newman somewhat -- speak with mild versions of the typical accents among Twin State natives -- that is, mild compared to what they were when I was growing up there in the 1930s and 1940s.
