It's been too many years since I've seen this and also read it in a play-reading group so I'm not aware of any cuts.
However, I found it very moving and IMO the cast was superb.
I'm going to recommend this to the play reading group I'm currently in and -- IF (and after) we do it -- I'll come back and add further comments in this thread.
But for now, I think this version is absolutely great.
ETA:
"George and Emily are atrocious in their roles, and they drop entire monologues! I was astonished at the amount of the play that they just cut and cut and cut and cut."
I couldn't wait to get some sense of the validity of your criticism so I got a copy of "Our Town" from the library and read all of Act III while the movie/play is still remaining fresh in my memory from viewing it last night. (I chose Act III because it has a lot of Emily reacting to her family and her new "classmates.")
I could not sense THE SLIGHTEST realistic grounds for your criticism from the material in its very crucial final act and I must conclude that your criticism is extremely biased and personal AND based on grounds far different than those you claim.
I've also seen comments from one or two viewers claiming Emily, or Emily and George, or the Stage Manager (Paul Newman) were all miscast and gave deficient performances. I equally strongly disagree with
those views: IMO, all 3 gave magnificent, state of the art performances in their roles.
(And for those who now have questions and doubts as to which judgments to believe, mine or theirs -- you can review a number of films the people with our specific IMDb usernames have previously reviewed and then decide who among us expresses opinions with which you feel most comfortable.)
