This is a national offense to Bulgarians

The movie shows a distorted picture of Bulgarians and puts a stain on the whole country. As a Bulgarian, I am deeply offended by this mediocre movie.

Returning papers...gay for rich men...smugglers of radio-active weapons ?! I'm sure none of the makers of this "movie" has been in Bulgaria !

reply

I believe on the DVD, the director of the film states that this movie is based on a book which was based on the author's own experience. It doesn't have to reflect the character of all Bulgarians, just the circle of people which the author was involved with.

reply

The movie was about a small number of people who happened to be from Bulgaria. That doesn't mean that all Bulgarians are criminals. By following your logic, you could say that because the Spanish characters in the film were gay men, therefore all Spanish men are gay.

You are over reacting to fictional characters in a fictional film.

Won't somebody please think of the children?!?

reply

Maybe not because when the title is clearly put in such a way as to have a meaning. If they didn't want to make it a political movie (because it is as a lot of you like to spit across to the other europe after you sold it to the russians and germans) they wouldn't have emphasized the country in the title.

Then it wouldn't have mattered where the characters were from.

I wonder if lethal weapon 4, with all it's anti asian bias was titled "lethal chinese triads" how the reception would have been...

so save it until YOUR country is insulted. then preach whatever you want.

reply

I agree with that. It's a terrible title.

1) Probably this is not the way Bulgarians are seen by the countries Tourism Board but, hey, this is a movie, art, you know. And there for artistic purposes anything is allowed that suits directors concept.
2) Personally I enjoyed the movie it is well written and directed. And if you think - who is least sympathetic, then this sooner would be the main Spanish character who becomes so soft for his lover, unable to act rationally or ethically just because he enjoys sex with Kyril so much. What could happen to anyone though. I also fancy the fact that a specific E.Europen dominates so much in the film.
3) And how many mainstream films are there were one can see Eastern Europeans with seriously built characters? Basically there are caricature villains, Russian mafia and nothing else. Eastern European characters are so few that one shoul be thankful that there is any representation at all. Latvia (my native country) has so far been mentioned in only one film "Leaving Las vegas". Yuri, member of a local gang, is form Latvia - "must be a tough place", someone comments in the movie.
4) Male and female prostitutes from E.Europe is an issue in the W.Europe. From this perspective the film is even not so fantastic. Although I think its genre is more romantic comedy then social realism.
5) Take it easy. It is art!

reply

NO. This is only a apart of life not only of Bulgarians but every body, any body who struggles and need money papers green cards or what ever.

reply

Exactly. Are there hustlers and mafiosi in, and from, Bulgaria? Sure. There are hustlers and mafiosi everywhere.

I'm thinking why the author is using bulgarian people in the movie? Maybe he hates them, or he had bad contacts with them. As i know the country with most gay man and women is Holland. So he can put this characters in the movie and there will be no offense. Am i right :) About the movie - It's piece of *beep*

reply

I find the movie very interesting and there is no way someone should be offended from mentioning this country.I am from Bulgaria i am so sad that movie wasn't released in the cinema's here but the brokeback mountain because there is no shame telling the true esp. in the art!

reply

It's not really a film about Bulgaria, or all Bulgarians. Maybe it's a distorted picture because gay men in Madrid only meet the worst Bulgarians (although Kyril wasn't all bad; he had a few scruples and occasionally some good instincts). The guy's family back in Bulgaria were pretty nice (although the predatory cousin was a chip off the old block), and Kalina was actually a nice girl -- just a little dumb and in the way. Of course the premise is that the Bulgarian economy doesn't offer young Bulgarian men enough to keep them at home. I don't know if that's true or not, but a lot of the former Warsaw Pact states have had economic troubles. And a lot of people in former Communist countries haven't developed the same ethics in private enterprise as a lot of people in Western Europe and the Americas -- under the Communists they didn't get much practice at it. In a Totalitarian society, gaming the system is how you get by.

Having just seen the movie I would like to weigh in. "They might be Bulgarians" is an older English idiom for "They might be gay." I think its also sad that you cannot acknowledge that not all Bulgarians are upstanding citizens. Every country has its devils.
