(Spoilers) Anyone else wonder if this was influenced by Preacher?

Specifically, the ending (the death of God) and the reason for it (that He is power-mad, and his creation has outgrown him) are virtually identical to the ending of Preacher (the comic by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon). Granted, there are a lot of differences, but the point is exactly the same; the God described in the Bible (especially the Old Testament) is childish, vain, arrogant, jealous, petty...far inferior, in fact, to many human beings, and unworthy of their worship. He certainly doesn't apply his own commandments to Himself.

There are other similarities too, but that was the one which really struck me.

I know Russell T. Davies is a big comics fan, so there's a good chance he read Preacher - which finished a couple of years before The Second Coming was filmed. Does anyone know if he was influenced by it?
