Eytan Fox also directed Yossi and Jagger, a quite short (70 min.) but very moving film concerning two men in the Israeli army who are in love but have to keep it undercover. It is also loosely based on a true story and features some very fine acting. It preceded Brokeback Mountain by several years but shares some interesting parallels with it. I recommend it very highly.

"The director and his loving husband of 19 years (who wrote the screenplay) usually include gay characters and gay subplots in anything they do. He has said in interviews that in To Walk on Water, Eyal and Axel had a physical relationship and love affair, before Eyal married Axel's sister and had a child by her -- which is what happened with the real Mossad agent on whom the story is based. "

Hmm... I just finished watching the movie on DVD and, while I can see that as a possibility, I don't think it's a necessity for the relationship to work.

In a way I was reminded of Benigno and Marco, the two male characters in Almodovar's Talk to Her. It's an unlikely friendship that becomes very real. And while there is some gay subtext, I think you can read it either way.

IMO Eytan Fox best film to date is The Bubble. It's even more controversial than Walk on Water, both on its political and sexual contents.

Yossi & Jagger is another good film directed by Fox.
