reply

Thanks, I checked them out on IMDB and found some of these movie very interesting. I'll try find these movies.

reply

I highly recommend the Italian movie "I'm Not Scared" which is the English title for "Io non ho paura". It is available on DVD. If you live in the USA, you can rent this movie at Blockbuster Video. I definitely know that "I'm Not Scared" is one of the best movies ever from Italy.

reply

Thank you very much sharc66. I saw some interesting comments about the movie on IMDB. Unfortunately I live in Denmark, so Italian and Spanish movies are difficult to get in Denmark. We have blockbuster in Denmark as well, but foreign movies ( except American movies ) are not popular here in Denmark. So we don't have Italian movies on our blockbuster.

So I'll order and buy the DVD on Internet.

reply

I'm in an Italian Cinema class and here are some of the ones that I have seen that I would recommend:

- Nuovo Cinema Paradiso
- La Stanza del Figlio
- Ladri di Biciclette

Let me know if you're extremely into film and I'll give you a list of some that I didn't find particularly enjoyable to watch, but I could appreciate them.

reply

I really appreciate your help, thank you ckmorgan3. I checked them out on IMDB and it seems that they're good. I got a lot of Italian movies due to the recommendations on IMDB :D I haven't seen one single of them yet, but I'll see them during the summer ( I might need some timeout, lol ). I'll get those movies that you have recommended soon.

I am actually extremely into films and you're welcome to post them. Please don't urge. Thanks once more for your kindness and helpfulness.

reply

I got all 3 movies already :)

I'm all over that movie "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso". I have seen it when I was younger, but I didn't remember the name of the movie. Thanks again dude.

I don't know if you're into spanish movies, but I can recommend "Habla con ella" = "Talk to her". It's actually good.

reply

I have not seen "Habla Con Ella" yet but I will see it. Thank you s011239. Also if you like foreign movies here is a list of some good movies that I have seen. If you see any that you like, the website amazon.com sells all of these movies except for the first top 3 on the list. I hope that the first 3 will be released sometime soon in the USA but I have not heard of a release date yet.

sharc66, thanks for your movie list and I really appreciate your kindness and help.
I have already seen:
Der Untergang
The Sea Inside (Mar Adentro) ( poor that man, you know what I mean )
Shaun of the Dead ( crazy zombie movie )
The Experiment ( this movie is very similar about the ongoing abuse in prisons )
Nightwatch ( nattevagten ) ( Danish ) ( I think that there is an American version of this film )

I recommend movies made by “Lars Von Trier”. His movies are very provocative. All my friends like his movies, except me.
Here are some movies made by him:
Riget (The Kingdom ) ( horror movie ). Note: Recommended
Idioterne ( The Idiots ). Note: This movie is very provocative.

Another movie that I recommend is “Das Boot” ( German ).
Most of these movies are available on this link: http://www.dvdpricecheck.co.uk

I get the impression, that people in this forum assume that I’m American. I take it as complement :) But my English is not that good.

Thanks again dude

PS: I already have "Io non ho paura", but I haven't got time to see the movie due to my examination periods.

reply

I have seen Riget (The Kingdom ). I liked it. The Swedish doctor that would go to the Hospital's roof top every night and yell curses at Danish people was funny. Also some of the things in Riget were very spooky and creepy. I have seen "Das Boot". That is also a good movie. I will check out Idioterne (The Idiots)since it seems like an interesting movie. Also I did see another Danish movie called "Flickering Lights" (Blinkende lygter) that was good. Thank you for your suggestions, s011239.

reply

No problem dude. I recommend following movies:

I kina spiser de hunde (A.K.A. In China they eat dogs) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180748/

Gamle mænd i nye biler (A.K.A. old men in new cars)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246692/

Cinema Paradiso

There are beautiful movies!!

Good luck!

reply

Thank you monooulin. I have already got Cinema Paradiso but I haven't seen it yet. However, "Il postino" looks very interesting on IMDB. I'll get it soon.

Your welcome s011239
If you are interested in Spanish movies, more precisaly Argentinian movies (Where I am from), tell me, there is a lot of good movies, much of them are from the style like Italian or French movies.

Bye!

reply

Hola monooulin.

Que pasa jefeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?

Thanks again. I'm from Denmark and somehow I got fascinated by the south European film culture which also includes your country.

I've been in Spain-Zaragoza as an exchange student (I study Biotechnology), so I speak a little Spanish. I also understand Italian.

So far I've seen "Hable con ella" & "Mar adentro ". Unfortunately I didn't have time to watch more Spanish movies during my stay in Spain. When I was in Spain, there was a funny "Coca Cola" commercial which was made in Argentine (I think).
I'm not sure if it was shown in your country, but it was really funny to watch that Indian guy who went berserk and sang the song "Del pita pita del" :)

Yes, I’m interested in Spanish/Argentines films.

Thanks for your generous advice.

reply

Hola!
I can't write anything in danish like you in spanish...

well, yes! "Hable con ella" is a great movie, I liked a lot and "Mar Adentro" I didn't see it yet, but everybody tell that is a terrific movie, I like Javier Bardem very much.

I don't know wich is the Coca Cola commercial that you mention, but there is a lot of foreign commercials filmed in Argentina, because the monetary change (u$s, euro), is very convenient (not for us...)

Well, here I tell you some argentinian movies, some that I liked more..

Nueve Reinas (not Criminal, its remake, ughh!!)
El abrazo partido
Herencia (2001)
Historias mínimas
El perro (2004)
El hijo de la novia
El faro
La vida según Muriel

well, there are some of them.
I hope you can see some of them.
Bye and next, you tell me wich danish movies you recommend..
I saw a lot of scandinavian movies, but I don't remember if they was Dane, Norwegian, Finn...

reply

Hej(Danish)=Hi=Hola=Ciao=Guten tag (German)

I have the coca cola commercial on a MPEG file and it takes like 50 MB. It was a big hit in Spain and the music from this commercial was even played on spanish discos.

Thanks for the film list, my friend. I think that I'll wait to get them after September. Soon, I'm going to work in Germany for 2 months, it's a job that is related to my education.

I recommend movies made by “Lars Von Trier”. His movies are very provocative.
Riget (The Kingdom ) ( horror movie ). Note: Recommended
Idioterne ( The Idiots ). Note: This movie is very provocative.

Other danish movies:
Blinkende lygter (Try it)
kina spiser de hunde (A.K.A. In China they eat dogs) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180748/

Gamle mænd i nye biler (A.K.A. old men in new cars)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246692/

Den Kroniske Uskyld (If you're into movies of 80'es)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089443/

Det Forsømte forår (If you're into movies of 80'es)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106949/

I've noticed that Argentina is leading the world champion league in south america. I think that Argentina will be a good team for the coming world cup.

Hasta entonces

reply

I'm in. Yes, I would be interested in movies from Argentina.
Italian movie I watch recently "The Leopard" historic (1963)
staring Burt Lancaster about the unification of Italy.
For the ladies old French movie "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964) award winner. Thanks for everyone's recommendations !

reply

Try also Cinema Paradiso. (I'm referring to the re-make).

reply

Thank you very much.

I have Nuovo cinema Paradiso, but I don't know where to get the remake version.

Is "remake" version in Italian?

reply

This is the re-make! (Nuovo cinema paradiso)...the first one was produced in 1957 (Vecchio cinema paradiso)...I have not seen the original; only the remake, which I loved very much.

Both, of course,are Italian. :-)

I am sure you have in your collection "La Vita es Bella" and "Il Postino"--those are pretty good ones too.

reply

Thanks again. La Vita es Bella has a sad ending, but I find the movie very good and I like the movie.

However, I didn't get "Il Postino" yet. Hopefully soon.

reply

You are welcome! I also enjoy watching English and French films. Have you had the chance to watch any of the following:

La Gloire de Mon Pere
Le Chateau de Ma Mere
I Capture the Castle
Un Homme et Unne Femme
Les Parapluise de Cherbourg
Shadowlands
Remains of the Day
L'Amant
Dear Frankie

reply

Thank you very much. I have only seen "Dear Frankie". It's a great movie.

I'll try to get the other movie in your list.

reply

You are most welcome! Happy viewing. :-)

reply

s011239, have you seen a movie from Denmark called "Reconstruction" that was made in 2003? I saw this DVD today in a store. If you have seen this movie, would you recommend that I buy it?

reply

Dude, thanks for the tip. I haven't seen the movie "Reconstruction" yet. It’s a bit embarrassing since I'm Danish and I didn't know anything about the movie.

Anyway, I can recommend you another Danish movie called "Kinamand".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414195/

The movie is about pro forma marriage between a Danish man and a Chinese woman.

The Spanish movie “Torrente, el brazo tonto de la ley” is also recommended.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120868/

PS: I'm in Germany now and I got 6 weeks left to complete my work in Germany, so I don't have a DVD player :(

PS: I’m looking forward to return to Denmark :)

reply

I will try to find those movies but in the USA there are many european movies that cannot be rented or bought here. For anyone that likes Spanish and Italian movies, a good move from Spain is "Abre Los Ojos" which is made by the very same director that made the movie "Mar Adentro" (Alejandro Amenábar). Also the Italian movie "Dellamorte Dellamore" is very good.

reply

s011239, I looked for those Spanish and Danish movies that you mentioned but I cannot find them in the USA. I did see the movie "Dear Frankie" after you talked about it and it is good movie. But I do have some very good news for other people that live in the USA. There are 3 very very good european movies that will soon be released on DVD in the USA next month (August). Below are these movies. I highly recommend them.

Downfall (aka Der Untergang) (2004) (Germany) - DVD Release August 2, 2005
Layer Cake (2004) (UK) - DVD Release August 23, 2005
Kontroll (2003) (Hungary) - DVD Release August 30, 2005

reply

Sharc66, I'm facing same problem as you, to find those movies on DVD. At least 70 % of these movies which are mentioned on this forum, can not be bought or rented on DVD in my country or on Internet. That's why I'm downloading them on Internet as DivX format by P2P program. The quality of the downloaded movie are good, but the problems are:
1: No subtitles. Sometimes it's possible to find the subtitles on Internet.
2: Investment of a TV cable for your PC. I hate watching movies on PC.
3: P2P is to damn slow. Some movies takes like 3-4 days.

I previous stated that I've rented all these movies, but that't not true. Probably the moderator will ban me for this advice.

If you want movies such as "Kinamand" and "Torrente, el brazo tonto de la ley", then I can rip the dvd'es into DivX format with subs. I have both movies on DVD. I'll make a FTP server for you. WAIT UNTILL I return from Germany to Denmark.

I’ve spoken English all day and mind is really exhausted. So sorry for my bad English.

reply

Dear monooulin

I'm very sorry. Today, I checked my PM for first time ever. There was only one message from you :(

I never expected that people would PM me.

Now, I've replied your PM (with my email address). If you haven't recieved it, please let me know.

I'm very eager to read about your country. I'll write about mine as well.

It's an interesting way to get friends on Internet. I've never tried this way before.

Hasta entonces

reply

s011239, that is very nice of you. It would be good to get some european movies from your FTP server when you get back to Denmark. Thank you. I am surprised about what you said about seeing foreign DVD's in Denmark. Since you live in Denmark, can't you buy other european movie DVD's like from Spain or Italy and then watch the DVD's on your home DVD player in Denmark? I thought that the DVD's in Europe were all in the same Region. Mainly Region 2 like on this list that I found on the Internet.

REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

reply

sharc66, the problem is not the region of DVD’es. In fact, I have a region-free DVD player and I've installed the necessary codecs for playing DVD movie on my PC.

I can assure you that movies made from South European countries are not popular in Denmark. Only movies from USA, U.K., and Ireland are popular movies. Denmark is a small country and there are very few Italian, Spanish or French speaking persons in Denmark. Most of us in Denmark can understand and speak English.
That's why it's so difficult to get foreign DVD movies in Denmark since Danish find them unattractive.

This link shows playing movies in all Danish cinemas: http://www.biobooking.dk/index.jsp

Click on the menu "Vælg film", means choose a movie. There you'll see only Danish and American/English movies.

You can also try this link: http://www.dvdpriser.dk/Showsubcategory.asp?ID=221
On the field "Søgeord:", you can search on any DVD'es which are sold in Denmark. Generally it's very difficult to find specific non-english movies in Denmark.

There are few foreign non-english movies that you might be able to find and these movies are: A very long Engagement, Das boot, Life is beautiful etc.
Movies like, "La finestre di Fronte" is NOT possible to buy in Denmark.

Ordering foreign DVD from Internet is very problematic. Since, I'm not confident with South European Internet trade.

I only order DVD'es from www.dvdsoon.com, www.cdwow.com etc. On those mentioned homepages, it's difficult to get those specific foreign movies.

Another thing for FTP, keep in mind that I’ve got limited download/upload 10 Mbit connection in Denmark.

I hope that I answered your doubt in proper.

reply

s011239,

I don't doubt that it is difficult to find Spanish and Italian movies in Denmark. I was referring that DVD's in Europe are Region 2 so if someone from Denmark buys a DVD movie that was made in Spain or another european country like "Io non ho paura" or "Abre Los Ojos" then the Foreign DVD can been seen in Denmark. But I cannot see DVD movies made in Europe since my DVD player is a Region 1 DVD player. I can buy a Region Free DVD player so that I can see european movies but there is a problem with that. If I buy a Region Free DVD player then there are some American movies that I cannot see because some American DVD movies have RCE (Regional Coding Enhancement) and some of these American DVD movies cannot be seen on Region Free DVD players.

This link that you gave me is very good and has lots of european movies:
http://www.dvdpricecheck.co.uk

It is just that I should get a Region Free DVD player first before I buy some of the foreign made DVD's. But by using that link I thought that you could buy DVD's from other countries like Germany or Italy and then watch them.. but I did not know that it was problematic for you to get some of these foreign DVD's from the internet.

reply

sharc66,

Ahhhh I see your point now. I didn't know that it was problematic for you to play European DVD movies. I didn't know about this RCE issue.

Anyway, there is another movie that I can recommend which is:
Swades: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367110/

It's an Indian movie. Usually I don't like Asian movies, but Swades is actually good.

reply

s011239,

Some American DVD's use RCE. I wanted to ask you, do you watch many American made DVD's that are Region 1? If you do, have you ever had any problems watching any American made DVD's? I hear that some region free DVD players work better than others. Also thanks for the recommendation on the Indian movie. I can also recommend two movies from Asia.

House of Flying Daggers (2004) (China)
Akira (1988) (Japan)

reply

sharc66, thanks your movie recommendations.

I order American DVD movies from Canada or USA. Because the quality of these movies are much better and cheaper (including shipping) than Europe. Though, I'm sometimes dealing with stupid customs duty. When the customs duty in Denmark get my ordered DVD movies at the post office, then I have to pay 50-70 % additionally for these DVD movies.

I have never ordered a RCE DVD movies. They only offer med R1 from Canada and USA, so I never had problems to play these Region 1 DVD movies.

I’ve get nearly two weeks left from Germany. German people are really nice but I'm really bored here.

reply

s011239,

thank you for the information. Almost all the movies that I have talked about on this forum can be bought in the USA on DVD. I always order from amazon.com and sometimes on the website for amazon.com there is a warning that RCE DVD's sometimes have problems playing on region free players. But since I do not have a region free DVD player I do not know if it is a big or small problem. I will probably be going to Munich Germany next month in September for Oktoberfest. I have never been to Oktoberfest before but it seems like it will be fun.

reply

sharc66

Thanks for the reply. Frankly, I find it quite stupid that all DVD movies don't have one standard region instead of these current existing regions for DVD'es.

Now I'm curious and have many questions. Are you going to München (Munich) alone? Do you know someone in Germany?
From Emden (the German city, where I am now) takes 5-6 hours by train to München. I live very close to Netherlands. On the 29'Th August, I'll return back to Copenhagen/Denmark.

Oktoberfest is fun but a little bit too crowded, noisy and lot of smoke.

You'll have fun in München and people are very nice. There are many young tourists from all over the world.

Ahhhh, once you're in Germany, you should take the opportunity for buying foreign movies despite the different foreign region.

reply

Yes. It would be better if there were only 1 Region for all DVD movies that are made. I am going to München with a friend. I do have a cousin in Frankfurt but I don't think that I will be going to Frankfurt on this trip. I will be in München for a few days then I will go to Amsterdam for 1 day before going back to the USA. When I am at Oktoberfest I will have to experience ordering beer the German way ("Eine Maß bitte" und "Noch eine Maß"). Last time I was in Europe I did go to Spain (Madrid and Barcelona) but I did not buy any DVD's even though I did see many different DVD's in some of the stores. When I go to Europe next month, I will look at the DVD's that are availible in München and Amsterdam. Thanks! That is a good idea, s011239!

reply

sharc66, thank you for you response.

I'm sure that you'll enjoy for being in München and Amsterdam.
Another way to order a beer in German is "Ein großen bier, bitte". I must mention that the sentence might be grammatically inaccurate since I never had any German language lessons.

The reason that I'm into Italian movies has something to do with my Italian ex-girlfriend. For some years ago, I dated the most beautiful Italian woman ever. We realized that long distance relationship didn't work out. Now we're friends.

Francesca opened up my eyes for Italian culture, food, movies and music.
I have many Italian friends now and they don’t like Italian movies which I find it a bit strange. I visit Italy at least once per year and I prefer not to buy any Italian DVD movies in Italy, because most DVD movies does not provide English Subtitles.

I want to apology for my bad English since English is not my native language.

reply

s011239,

Most but not all people in the USA rarely watch foreign films. In the past I also did not like watching foreign films. A few years ago I decided to watch a foreign movie called "Abre Los Ojos". After I finished watching "Abre Los Ojos" I was very surprised because that movie was very very good. Actually that movie is an excellent movie. So then I started to watch some other foreign films and I did like some of them. As for Italian movies most of the ones that I have seen I do not like. But there are 4 Italian films that I like which are Malena, Io non ho paura, Dellamorte Dellamore, and La Finestra di fronte. Also I just got the new DVD which was just released in the USA. It is an excellent movie from the UK called "Layer Cake". What a great movie. Right now I am waiting for next week for the new DVD release of the Hungarian movie "Kontroll". But you are right, before I buy any DVD's in Europe, I have to check that the DVD has English Subtitles. I understand some German and Spanish but I still want to have the English Subtitles on the DVD.

reply

Hello sharc66

There is a funny comedy German movie called "Erkan & Stefan gegen die Mächte der Finsternis".

I might go to Berlin in October month (~20 October). I'm going with some Exchange students from my university and the students are from USA, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Czech Rep., France. They're eager to visit Berlin.

reply

Hi s011239,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look for that when I am in Germany. Yesterday I saw a very good German film at the movie cinema. The movie is called "Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei". Right now that German movie is playing at the movie cinemas in the USA. I will be in München on Saturday September 24th for Oktoberfest. Also I saw a Danish DVD in the store today. The movie is called "2 ryk og 1 aflevering" or the movie in English is called "Kick 'N Rush". Is this a good movie to rent or buy?

reply

Hi sharc66

Thanks for your reply. I hope that you enjoyed the Oktoberfest in Germany and your travel to The Netherlands.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I cannot recommend the danish movie called "2 ryk og 1 aflevering" because I've not heard anything about the movie in Denmark. So the movie must be very bad.

There is another movie from South Korea "Joint Security Area " which is strongly recommended to watch.

A good news for me to announce is that I'm going to make my final thesis at Stanford University in California. I'm going there from 2006 July to 2007 January. I'll make a project which is related to genetics and clones.

reply

s011239,

Sorry it took so long to reply. I have not gone to imdb's web site for a long time now. Yes Oktoberfest was a lot of fun. Also the weather was great while I was there. I enjoyed the food especially the sauerkraut with sausages and mustard or Senf in German. Also the beer was very good and I tried some German Apple Wine which was great. You will like California. It is a very interesting place. I highly recommend that you visit the city of San Francisco when you are living in California. A friend of mine lives in Los Angeles and he is always saying how much he enjoys it there. That is very good news that you will be spending some time in California!

reply

Thank you for your advice but I think that Cinema Paradiso (also the remake version) have already been mentioned on this forum. I already got that movie.

reply

the pitifully short list of italian movies i've seen and also liked are:<br>
cinema paradiso
la vita e bella
malena

like you, i'm also looking for good italian movies, but so far i've only encountered a few forums about it... anyway, maybe you'd be interested in some of the titles i saw (and am planning to watch =), but weren't mentioned yet here. They are:

umberto d.
pane e tulipani / bread and tulips
la stanza del figlio / the son's room
mediterraneo
respiro
la meglio gioventu / the best of youth
il postino

i also LOoooooVE german films! They're the best!!! So far i've seen das experiment, lola rennt, hitlerjunge salomon, and der untergang. They all satisfied my craving for daring, intellectual films.

reply

sisyphus_the_fool,

Thanks for your movie list and I really appreciate that. I'll get these movies that you've mentioned as soon that I return to Denmark from Germany.

I'm also into German movies but I haven't seen lola rennt and hitlerjunge salomon.

I've few German movies in Denmark but I forgot titles of them. When I return to Denmark, I'll write them down on this poster.
