Why did Filippo cry in the night?

I would like to know why Filippo cry in the night right after Giovanna told him that she would quit her job in the chicken factory and become a pastry chef. What makes a man, tough man like Filippo, cry after hearing that news? What is going on in his head? Frightened? Worried because they could not maintain their standard living? Envied because Giovanna could follow her dream and he is stuck with a dead end job?....there is no logical explanation i could think of so if anyone could help me to sort it out, i would appreciate very much. Thank you so much in advance. I really like the film but sometimes it can be really unfathomable.

I believe Filippo was simply afraid and "guilty". He's afraid of what's to come with Giovanna's choice to leave work and the guilt he feels that he himself cannot support her and his family with what he has become..a man in a dead-end job with no real opportunities. I think Filippo only appeared tough, physically, but he was a "kitten" inside...hence, he brought the strange old man home, refusing to leave him alone. Filippo had a big, emotional heart.

I was wondering myself but I came to the conclusion that Filippo
might have noticed a change of feelings in Giovanna hence, he was afraid
of losing her. This is just my guess but I still wonder why he cried.

It was a mixture of a lot of emotions. Fear of isecurity as one. He kept switching, knowing Giovanna was not a quitter, so they would be alright. Also, perhaps he saw her in Lorenzo's through the facing window, who knows? Maybe he felt how rude and unjust he had been to her, and only her body was close to him but she was not in love with him much any longer. Can be a lot of other things too. Human mind is a complicated thing. Not just one thought looms in there you know...

i like that they added his tears. it shows he's a good man with feelings as well, and doesn't put all the attention solely on giovanna, thus reaffirming her feelings when she looked from lorenzo's window to her own.

adding to the duty vs. desire and such.

Just my take: recall the scene where they are all out eating at a restaurant and Filippo notices that Giovanna has a far-away look in her eyes and thinking hard about other things. I think he suspects that she might be thinking of leaving (or even having an affair).

Then later he also notices other changes taking place in her routines, so by the time she tells him that she has something important to discuss, he may have thought that she was about to tell him it was all over between them.

I think he was so relieved to know she was not leaving him after all & yet he was also overwhelmed by the changes taking place in their situation, her new-found independence. She had also stated "please help me" and I think it was the first time in a long time she had leaned on him in such a way and it made him realize just how much she needed him, whereas before she always found some way to belittle him or dismiss him.

You've done some bad things, sweetie.

I completely agree with yr point of view.during the first few scenes,we get an idea about different natures of this couple.wife is short tempered and bliterating while husband is soft hearted, kind and loving person.she is very mean too him all the time and always found some way to belittle him or dismiss him.during the entire course of movie, we didn't witness not even one loving glimp towards him.

I think that she never loved him or loves anymore.and after the peeping, lusting and having brief romantic affair, it seems pretty clear.and I also thinks she doesn't love lorenzo either.it just a lustful gate-away from her routine frustrated life and gain some excitement in her life.that's the reality.but for her it's the possibility of fulfilled love without any baggages. who doesn't want that.but loves always comes with a baggages and love, respect, commitment, trust is the base of marriage, here there are none exist.as the director's msg clears the air that you can't love any one unless you love yourself.

Well, filippo is a sensible man, not a stupid one. and after their verbal fight, he knows what's she thinks of him.during the dinner with his neighbors, it's seems clear that she seriously thinking about leaving him and break the family which is heart and soul for him.and when she confront him in the early morning, the tension is palpable on his face and fear in his eyes. so in fact next night he feels quite a range of emotions mostly relieved, helplessness, agitation, agony, for future and in these state, a slite thought of his kids makes even tough man into tears..

During entire movie, she was very cruel to him and it's painful to watch.she doesn't appreciate what she has and wandering around for what she wants.

Filippo is a nice character in this movie. director has done a very injustice to his character by limiting his role for few scene and left it underdeveloped,it's just become the punching bag for her and pity for us.it has a very real potential to be a central character rather than a supporting cast.... 😞😌😔😓
