How do they doobi Oobi?

My wife and I were wondering how they manage to show all the hands used for the various Oobi characters without getting the rest of the actors' bodies in the picture. We both figure it involves placing the sets above the actors' heads, so that they raise their hands to be level with the sets and their heads and bodies are thus below the frame. Where we differ in our speculation is that I'm guessing the actors are on their knees and the sets are maybe at the level of an average desk or table. My wife thinks the motions are too smooth for that and that the actors must be standing, so that the sets are high off the ground. Anybody know for sure?

Your wife is probably right. The characters are obviously played by professional puppeteers. I have seen shows saying how they make shows with The Muppets (Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, specifically), and the sets are placed high off the ground with the Muppeteers reaching up, with monitors placed so they can see what they are doing. HTH.

If they were professional puppeteers they would have puppets. Anybody could do this show. I've been making hand puppets for years and I am nothing close to a pro puppeteer. Professional pupeteers need... You guessed it: PUPPETS!

hey randulator,

you must not know a thing about puppets, and the fact that anything can be a puppet if it is manipulated, including your actual hand. Take a look at the credits for the puppeteers on oobi, then tel me they're not professional puppeteers, moron.

you guys should see the Helping Hands from "Labyrinth." That was the coolest looking thing in the movie, and it was just a bunch of hands. And what about shadow puppets?

How can the puppeteers see what they're doing?

reply

I put this up and now its gone... but I believe the set is above them and they see what they are doing on screens.

Oh, good point!
