I gave this movie a 10

It is an awesome movie. It really touched me somehow. After I watched, I couldn't stop thinking about for awhile. It is not your average samurai movie. It is more deep......

I agree with you, i really thought it'd be fighting movie - and to be honest, i'm not a huge fan of excessive violence without any story (ala Tarentino).

This movie had a great story, i found it really admirable and touching how he was such a good man, and always looked for a peaceful yet honorable way out, i think there should be more movies like this.

Really touching!

There are two more by the same director, Yoji Yamada. The Hidden Blade and Love and Honour. HB is almost the same story again, but very enjoyable. Check it out. L&H not out on DVD yet, I've ordered it from YesAsia. Can't wait.

This must have 10/10. The actors are great, great cinematography, wonderful setting and a story which is really unique and deals with essential human topics everybody can relate to. It truely deserves more recognition.

Definitely deserves a 10. It's an absolutely flawless film.

I agree with you all - how refreshing! Here's a recommendation, if you like Yamada-san's trilogy I think you will like this - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464038/. Enjoy.

This is pretty much a perfect movie, the kind of movie that only a veteran director like Yamada could make. It's funny, then, to consider that more than half of his career has been spent making the Tora-san movies; Yamada spent so much time with that character that, despite his experience as a filmmaker, it IS sort of surprising, in a pleasant way, to see a film this accomplished come from him so late in his career.

I think this is one of the best films made in recent years. Particularly in the foreign category.

reply

Doesn't "foreign" depend on where you're standing? Hollywood films are "foreign" to some of us.

I think we can all agree it's one of the best films made in recent years.

I'm only speaking for myself. So yeah, I'm from the states.

Have you seen the other two, Tempestnam? Equally excellent, in my view, though Tasogare Seibei perhaps has the edge, if only because of Hiroyuki Sanada. Lovely stuff, I wish Yamada-san would make some more.

reply

No, but I plan on seeing them. I didn't know it was considered a trilogy.

reply

It's a trilogy in that the three films are by the same director and have similar settings and themes - especially Tasogare Seibei and Kakushi ken oni no tsume (The Hidden Blade), almost the same story twice. The third one is Bushi no Ichibun, a similar setting but a different plot. They're not interconnected, you can watch in any order. Enjoy!
