This movie was so good...

***Chisai Spoiler Alert (for another movie)***

How good? Well considering that I forced myself to sit through all of "When the last sword is drawn" only the night before (man that thing was painful to watch, I mean, it was like the whole cast was either doing bad impressions of Mifune or they had just got back from the dentist and couldn't move a muscle), I was definitely in no mood to sit through another "samurai loyal to his family at the end of the era of the shogunate story", but this movie just totally drew me in.

To compare, by the end of WTLSWD when the main guy...well you know what happened...I really couldn't give a crap. While on the other hand, I was rooting for this guy the whole way.

So even though they both won some awards in Japan, and they have about the same rating here, am I not right to say that there is just no comparison?

Maybe if you rephrased your post in an intelligible fashion we'd know what you're on about.

Last Sword is more... Well, I found the characters to be more lovable and the narration to be more interesting. However it goes down the drain in the last 1/3.

Twilight Samurai is just the opposite, it is more traditional, more predictable but has a very moving finale.

But yeah, I guess you can compare them. I would say that Twilight is the " better " film but Last Sword is the more " ambitious " one.

I adored The Twilight Samurai. One of the best films I've seen for a while. Simple but very, very effective.

In "When the Last Sword is Drawn", they were just trying too hard. It was a good movie in general with a decent story but it just fell apart near the end. It's like they thought we couldn't like the main character unless they relentlessly beat it into our heads how awesome he was and how he affected those around him. They overdid it, and that made it actually harder to like the character and the movie. "Twilight Samurai" is so much more subtle and sophisticated, and feels so much more real. You're drawn in and you really feel the characters and what they're going through, without the movie having to beat you over the head with it the way "Last Sword" did. I agree, there's no comparison.
