I just recently watched 'Harakiri' (Seppuku) -- an excellent film that makes a scathing commentary on the false "bushi" of the samurai class. A must-watch if you haven't already seen it.
Mibu gishi den/When the last sword is drawn = Best samurai film ever.
You should try: Samurai Rebellion and Seven Samurai(You have probably seen it anyway)
I would also recomend the second and third movie in the Samurai Trilogy with Toshiro Mifune, though their dosent seem to exist a DVD version were the nights in those movies don`t become pitch black, which destroys the last hour of the second movie.
The movies mentioned by the other respondants here are excellent, no question. However, I rate "Daibosatsu Toge" (Sword of Doom) with Tatsuya Nakadai as one of the greatest movies of all time, and first among equals in the samurai genre.
"Sword of doom" is great, though Tatsuya Nakadais character is one evil bastard(Who somehow manages to be someone i can feel sympathy for....???.... must have something to do with a certain great actor :-)
That, and also because I believe his character recognizes the evil karma which has consumed his life. Ryunosuke's realization that his own impulses have caused his downfall, and his inability to behave in a manner that can reverse it--there is no way to take back rape or murder--makes him someone to be pitied as well as hated and feared. Toshiro Mifune's portrayal of Shimada-sensei also presents the other side of the coin--the virtuous swordsman.
Throne of Blood and Ran are both great Kurosawa films that I don't think have been recommended yet on this thread.
You might also enjoy the Zatoichi series starring Shintaro Katsu. They're often lighthearted and formulaic, but they're consistently well-made and enjoyable.
And I strongly second the recommendations of Samurai Rebellion, Harakiri, and Sword of Doom.
i definatly agree with all of these recomendations. but for me, lone wolf and cub started it all (introducing me to the genre), i highly recomend watching at least the first two, and reading the graphic novels. hidden fortress is good too.
Well, everyone, these are certainly all 'samurai films' in that the characters in them are samurai, but there's a very long distance between the Lone Wolf series, Twilight Samurai and Gohatto. It's like saying that High Noon, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Brokeback Mountain are all 'cowboy films'. It's interesting that there can be such a variety in what many might consider to be one genre. Discuss?
Thanks, Pfff. It is a confusing genre. Some of the low ratings on these boards for the more introspective type of jidai-geki - including some of Kurosawa's - I'm sure come from young lads who just like the swords-and-slashing chambara and are at a loss when they come across something like Chushingura, or any of Yamada-san's Poor Samurai trilogy. (Have you seen the other two, Pfff? Masterly, all three.)
I really enjoyed Hana too and was really surprised with the low rating on IMDB and think it is highly underrated. I think most people who like the Yamada's poor samurai films will enjoy that as well!
i just remember when i still young got this movie,
a samurai in ancient times presumed dead because in ice, when suddenly the modern age, there are people that see icebergs, and samurai were still alive and were surprised to see modern times
(sorry about my english, i dont know how to explain this,) its kinda like 1st Capt. America movie,
