I'm wondering why the rescuers knew to look for the hidden door to the shelter Noi was in. Is such a shelter a normal part of the homes in Iceland? Are they meant to help someone survive an avalance? I would guess you have at most only a few seconds to get into the shelter once you hear/feel an avalanche coming.

The rescuers probably just bury in the snow until they find something, in this case a door to a hatch. Of course they're not going to leave the door unclosed 'cause they have no idea what's in it, so they open the door and there lies Nói.

You may notice a dog when Noi leaves shelter. This is answer.
