What's 'a bottle of malt'?

At points in the film we see Noi and his grandmother drinking "malt". What is this? Is it alchoholic?

YES

Malt is a carbonated drink and the malt itself is a kind of a middle stage in making beer.. so it´s alcoholic a little.. but you would need to drink a full bathtub to get tipys or drunk from it :)

This drink can also be found in some other European countries, for example Denmark and Germany.

malt isnt really alcoholic. they will serve it to children and in iceland you can only buy alcohol in bars, restaurants and also in state run stores called 'vin bud' and malt is sold at the grocery store. although, it does taste a little like guinness beer. it is bitter. on christmas its often mixed with appelsin, which is similar to orange soda.

malt used to contain alcohol. for the last 10 years or so malt has been completely alcohol free. end of story.

In the uk we get sold something called Supermalt...its revolting. Only tried it twice, but from my memory tasted like thick pureed bran

A malt can also mean a malted milkshake.

It is a malt beverage similar to beer. The main difference is that it has little or no alcohol. Beer with an alcohol content above 2¼% was illegal in Iceland until the late 1980's. Malt provided a taste similar to beer but with no alcohol. Basically a beer substitute.

The food producer Goya produces a non-alcoholic malt beverage simply called Malta. It can be found at grocery stores that cater to Hispanic communities. I think it tastes awful. There is a similar Russian beverage called Kvas. Kvas tastes much better.
