just saw this last night and am curious about 2 things;
1) what is the bowl of food that Noi is eating near the start of the film before going to school? It was a really dark colour.
2) was the film set in the 1980s? Some of the clothes looked 80s and there seemed a lack of new technology, plus there was a rubiks cube featured:)

Hard to say when it was. There were no computers, mobile phones etc. so you might be right. Not that it makes a great deal of difference to the movie, I feel.
In the DVD extras, the director said that they avoided setting the film in any particular period.

The events take place in 2001 or later. When Noi steals the car he pulls his lock picking tools from a pocket calendar that has '2001' embossed in gold on the front cover. While it's true that he may have carried it around for awhile past 2001, it does make it clear that it's not before then.

Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order
Dagur Kari, the movie's writer director, says in the DVD "making of" documentary that he intentionally excluded mobile phones and computers in an effort to keep the movie out of a specific time period. I didn't noticed that lap top before but I had noticed the 2001 date book. I assume that and the lap top were included by accident.
Other than that, there would be a few other clues - the video cassettes seen in the book store, the Rubik's Cube, Mastermind (the game the title character played with Óskar) and the cars. I'm not very good at picking out the year that certain cars were made, but the ones in this movie all seem pretty recent. So clearly, even if not for the lap top and date book, this movie would clearly have taken place no earlier than the 1980s.
